Not-Quite-Halloween on the Rancocas Creek

Join us for our traditional Halloween trip on the Rancocas Creek, happening a few days before Halloween this year.  We are hoping for no early snow storms (2011) or hurricanes (2012) complicating the trip this year.  This is a 14 miles one-way trip from Burlington County College to Mount Holly that should take 4-7 hours, depending on water levels. This is an easy paddle suitable for all boat lengths (whitewater through sea kayak), water levels are currently low so you might rub gravel in a few places on the river, caution is recommended if you have a pristine composite boat. This paddle is suitable for novice paddlers who have the stamina to complete the trip.

We will meet at Iron Works Park in Mount Holly at 10:00am, with the goal of having a shuttle set up and being on the water by 11:00am. We will stop for lunch at Pemberton Dam, which is about 4 miles into the trip. This is a bring-your-own-lunch trip.

We will set up the shuttle the day of the paddle when we meet at the takeout. There are two portages along this route (one is short, the other is several hundred feet), so be prepared for them (shoes are recommended).

PFD's are required and must be worn. The weather is turning colder, please dress appropriately for cold weather paddling (no cotton, mutliple layers, etc). Bring a dry bag with a set of dry clothes, and bring it in the boat with you. With a longer trip like this you will be very cold and miserable if you fall in halfway through. This paddle will be held rain or shine but in case of extreme weather there will be a posting on the website by 7:00am the morning of the paddle.  If there are any questions then you can feel free to call me (Jason) at[masked]-7047.

A map of the Rancocas Creek Canoe Trail (which is the county name for the route we are following) can be found on the Burlington County Parks page here:

If you are using a GPS to find your way to the meeting location, the school next to the take-out is at 100 Wollner Drive Mt Holly, NJ 08060. Just drive past it and you should see the take-out on your right near the baseball fields.

My thanks to Jason and Chris for organizing such an outstanding trip on the Rancocas. If you were standing still it was cold, but for paddling the weather was beautiful. It was a very friendly group of ten and a very tranquil time. The fall colors were resplendent. I even got tips on paddling that made an immediate improvement. What a glorious day.

I'd love to join you all on this trip...if the waitlist opens I am in! Did last weeks paddle and had a great time! Seems like some folks are opting out but didn't change RSVP? That might let us on the waitlist in...maybe :) (I have a Halloween sponge bob costume but it will not fit in my kayak...) If you bump me up from the waitlist I will bring it, lol.

It's going to be cold cold cold on Saturday morning, in the low 40s when we launch, going up to the 50s in the afternoon. Please remember to bring a change of warm clothes in a dry bag with you on the trip, and remember to wear layers of synthetic clothing (cotton stinks for cold paddles, it retains water and cold). If shivering down a river doesn't sound like a fun time to you, please update your RSVP to "no", even if you are just on the waiting list. We are also doing this paddle on Sunday, if that day works better for you, please move your RSVP to that date. It will be a bit warmer in the morning on Sunday, but still chilly.

Jason, Since the Fall Foliage Family Float Festival did not get rained out this weekend...do you think you would consider giving folks on the wait list a shot at the proposed Sunday paddle?

I think this week will see a lot of folks canceling out of the trip due to temps being forecast-ed to be below 60 degrees (actually 57). I know I am considering canceling.
