Janes Island Camping and Paddling

We are heading down to the Chesapeake Bay, to beautiful Janes Island State Park in Crisfield, Maryland for a weekend of camping, kayaking, and relaxing.  There are 30 miles of water trails through/around the island, hiking trails on the mainland, and a nice campground on the mainland, where we will be staying.

The plan is to arrive at Janes Island State Park on Friday to set up camp, paddling on Saturday and Sunday morning, and driving home on Sunday.

Jason plans on paddling around Janes Island on Saturday, which is roughly a 14 mile paddle.  We will take multiple stops to explore the island and have lunch.  If you are doing the circumnavigation you should have a 14 foot or longer kayak, and a PFD is required and must be worn.  We will be launching at 10:00am on Saturday, from the kayak launch next to the boat ramp.

On Sunday Jason will be doing a trip on the water trails, meeting at the kayak launch at 10:00am.  Route/mileage to be determined by my feelings on Sunday. This trip is suitable for all paddling levels/boats.  PFDs are required and must be worn.

Of course you can also go out on trips on your own.  Remember to paddle safely, not to paddle alone, and always wear your PFD.  There are maps available at the camp store.

The campground has a variety of sites, some with electric, and some that allow pets, and they all have a picnic table and a fire ring (firewood available from the camp store).  The sites do not have water, but there are water taps throughout the campground, and there are  bathrooms with showers.  They have cabins for people who don't like sleeping in a nylon sack.  There is a grocery store and restaurants in town, a short drive away.  This is a state campground meaning alcohol is not permitted in the camp sites, but is permitted inside a motor home.  Two vehicles/six people are allowed to stay on most sites, for those of you who want to share to reduce costs.

You can make reservations online or over the phone, I recommend making reservations well in advance as this is a popular campground.  The park web site is here:

http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/eastern/janesisland.asp

This trip is rain or shine, though the paddling portions might be changed or canceled depending on weather conditions.  Details of changes will be posted on the DVK site, or you can contact me (Jason) via cell phone at[masked]-7047.  There is cell phone coverage at the campground.

There is a cold front coming in, so we have chilly temperatures (low 70s as highs), and more importantly some strong winds. Friday is 15-18 mph, gusting to 28mph, seas 2-3 feet and a small craft advisory. Saturday is 13-16 mph, seas 1-2 feet, and a possible small craft advisory in the morning. Sunday is nice with winds 6mph, seas 1 foot or less. If you go out paddling be mindful of your abilities, always paddle in a group, and always wear a PFD (life vest). If you do go out I strongly recommend staying in the protected sections of the island trails on the days the wind is bad unless you are an experienced rough water paddler with good self-rescue skills. We will figure out what is safe for the group paddles on Saturday and Sunday before we launch (10am at the dock). See everyone at the campground!

Does anyone who wishes to go for three nights wish to car pool with me? I can actually be flexible and stay two nights if someone who wishes to carpool can only do 2 nights.. Let me know. If you send me details about your kayak, I may be able to fit it on my roof rack. I have a Suzuki XL7 SUV. Alternatively, maybe you have a better vehicle for transporting kayaks. I am coming from South Jersey near Cherry Hill and Camden.
