The Reluctant Fundamentalist, Mohsin Hamid's tense drama, the film version of which is currently screening in London, tells the story of Changez, a Pakstani recently returned from The West where his enthusiastic New York lifestyle is rocked by the events of 9/11 leading him to convert from corporate to Islamic fundamentalism. The entire book is in the form of a monologue through the eyes of Changez when he takes a seat opposite a quiet American at a Lahore cafe. Hamid's brilliant novel asks more questions than it answers about The West's troubled and tempestuous relationship with the Muslim World, deliberately discomforting the reader.
Hopefully we'll have enough attendees to fill the room I've hired at the wonderful Moroccan restaurant that is Souk Bazaar.
