What made you join the drum circle?

I am interested in finding drummers who can play Sufi-style middle eastern and/or Turkish percussion. I am also interested in learning more about second line and other NOLA styles of drumming. I'm also interested in other styles as well.

What is your experience level with drumming (or other instruments)?

I've been dabbling with mid-east drumming for close to 20 years. I know a number of usuls/iqa'as (underlying rhytmic patterns), and pick up a lot by ear, but I do not have a lot of technique for the ornamentation. I taught guitar primarily, and some other instruments, from 1995 until 2008, as well as some college level music theory from 04-08. I played guitar in the mid-90s for some Boston-area hip-hop, jazz, and r&b groups. I attended the New England Conservatory of music for a little over 2 years, and had the opportunity to study composition and rhythmic principles with Bob Moses. Occasionally, I play Turkish or Moroccan percussion with groups in Boston, when I'm visiting, and played with a few groups off an on in the late 90s early 2000s, but again, without much technique to speak of.

Are you better with learning rhythms by listening to them, or seeing them on paper?

for the overarching stuff, by ear. If it's a really complex groove that I can't make sense of, I would prefer to see something on paper...but it's rare to find those types of grooves written down.

Would you be willing to play at any public events?

Maybe. I have specific restrictions on the venues in which I will play.

What is your drum/instrument of choice? (Possibilities include: doumbeks, djembes, bougarabous, bhogram, bongos, etc.)

doumbek and bendir.

Introduction

Hi. My name is Aaron. I dabble in hand percussion and set, but am mainly a guitarist by training. I used to teach music for a living, though now I teach Islamic Studies.
