Back by popular demand! Overnight on the Kokosing.

I can't tell you how pleased both Mike and I are that everyone had so much fun at our last overnight two weeks ago. I've been asked to schedule another trip sooner than later; so here it is.

We're going to leave Columbus at 10est and anticipate being on the water by 12:00. We'll drop all camping gear at the cabin before we head out.

For those of you that are coming in from other areas, the last time we all met in Utica at the BP (corner RT 13/62), and that seemed to work just fine.

See map for anyone that would like to meet us there: https://maps.google.com/maps?hq=http://maps.google.com/help/maps/directions/driving/mapleft.kml&f=d&dirflg=d

We have several different paddling option depending on the water levels; so I'll wait until we get closer to the trip date to determine. Either way there is no possible way you couldn't enjoy yourself.

We'll have a BBQ that night so bring something to grill or share.

1. Sleeping gear
3. Water gear including but not limited to; kayak, paddle, PDF, dry bag, extra clothing, etc.
4. Lunch for Sat. and Sun.
5. BYOB
6. Snacks
7. bug spray
8. fire wood would much appreciated
9. Kate bring my flashlight LOL

It will most certainly go down in the record books. I might ride up there Sunday just to get a look at it. Have to come in from the south, as Riley Chapel is under water. Mike said, it's up to his drive way and flowing over the top of the bridge.

A few people had asked about the deck bag I had. Here is a few links of the bag and the bag with extras.

The pricey part of the deck bag kit is the paddle float which was $49.

      July 11, 2013

    • Russ

You may not need the paddle float. I did get one for open water paddling. So you could piece together the kit and just put in what you really need. I mainly bought it to hold my fishing gear

    Check this out guys: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/oh/nw...

The water levels on Sunday were at 4,4ft and 371cfs. Today it's at 3440 cfs and over 9ft. The river is in the flood plains and the fields were we walked are most likely under water making that whole area a reservoir. I guess timing IS everything!

I'm not going to be able to make it. I'm looking at a SUV I'm trading my car and bike in for. If by chance I get out of the dealer by 11 I could meet at the put in by noon.

    July 6, 2013

    • Sandy

No I got the run-around as usual. Total waste of time! Even went to a different dealership and got an even worse run-around. I hate that dealers think they're not all playing the same transparent game. Looking at another vehicle at yet another dealer though. Lol.

That was a FUNtastic weekend! I had allot of fun, I should try the Factory rapids on the next trip, portaging alone was not fun. Met with more new friends, pleasant surprises:). Thank You again Sami & Mike.

I couldn't have asked to be associated with a finer group of individuals; as I have great respect for all of you. I had the chance to meet some really cool new friends this weekend, and bond even more with the core group; of which is one of the reasons I formed this meet up.

I do want to give a special shout out to Russ, who prepared one of the, if not the best dinners we had camping to date. Thanks again everyone for such a great time. It wouldn't be the same without you all

I need to know who is meeting me here, and who is meeting us in Utica? If you are meeting me here be here by 10:20, as we'll leave promptly at 10:30. If you are meeting us in Utica, give us about 45 minutes to get there. If you are meeting us at the river we'll be there by 12:00. We'll either put in at Millwood and paddle to Riley Chapel where we'll take a break. From there I want to continue down to the confluence where the Mohican and Kokosing form the Walhonding. Since the shuttle time is only a few minuted either way, we'll decide when we get up there where we'll actually put in. Note: We also need to have a solid confirmation from those of you that plan on spending the night (rain or shine). Those of you that are staying the night, please do not forget firewood!

If you have any questions call my home/office for in order to reach me prior to our leaving tomorrow.

Hi Shan, we'll be putting in at Millwood. Although we're going to drop our camping gear at Riley Chapel Rd and 715. just off the rivers bank.

      July 5, 2013

    • Sami

Most likely at Riley Chapel. However the shuttles from one place to the other are miniscule.

      July 5, 2013

      July 5, 2013

  • Sami

Okay guys, as stated in my original post I was going to wait until the last minute to determine where we would launch from all dependent on the current water conditions. I have a call into Mikey to confirm Don's comments below. If in deed the water level is that high, it would obviously be too risky for most.

I hate to keep everyone in limbo, just want to make sure I'm not leading you down a dangerous path. Right now as I'm sure everyone has seen, there is a 70% chance of rain tomorrow; so things may actually worsen in the next 24 hours.

I'll let everyone know by dinner time, what decision will be made.

    Thanks for your patience.

Okay guy! At this point I have been monitoring the river for two days, and it doesn't appear as if they have gotten as much rain as we have here in Central Ohio. Be it the water geek that I am, I have kept river stats from past trips. On the 15th when we last paddled the Kokosing it was at 671cfs and 5.61ft. Although it was fast, we had a great time without any issues whatsoever; even for some of the beginners amongst us. As of 14:00EDT it was at 477cfs and 4.51ft. With 14 days of straight rain in Central Ohio, I'm ready to escape. WITH THAT SAID, LET'S GO KAYAKING!!

So, Sami. Worst case for me is still working on west side of col until 12, then shoot up your way. Is there an address of the put in you can give for the gps (w/zip if possible). I hear rain is in the forecast, cant seem to get away from that on these overnights. My assumption is get there after you guys, put in myself and catch up. I don't foresee any problems and really don't want you to wait up for me. Probably wont be able to yak on Sun: have to be in Dublin by 3:45 for a hockey game.

    Food for Saturday night?
I offered to make Chicken Guacamoli on the grill for everyone. This is my secrete recipe. Just checking to see if everybody wants this? We will still need a few side dishes. Let me know so I can pick up the proper amount. If I could know by friday that would be great. Can't wait to do some paddling and some eating and with some good people.

    July 2, 2013

    • Russ

Rob I season the chicken breast then cook them. Guacamole is optional which is put on only if you like it. Some people who have said they don't like guac have liked this. So it's your choice. But If you like chicken I'll have one for you.

      July 4, 2013

Russ thank you. It's very generous of you to offer to feed the whole group. I do love chicken so I will accept.

    July 2, 2013

      July 2, 2013

    • SpongeBob

the water level should be high enough that you could even launch in Mt Vernon, if not Gambier and not have to do alot of paddling... miles before Factory ripples.

      July 4, 2013

  • Don S.

    Sami,
I was visiting my friends in Coshocton County today and I checked on the Kokosing river while I was out that way. It does not look good. The launch site at Millwood and the recovery site at the confluence with the Mohawk river are completly under water. In my opinion the water level is unsafe for anyone other than very experienced kayakers. If some of the people do go I strongly recommend everyone have their PFD's on at all times. I am not going to go this time.

    July 4, 2013

    • Russ

Don I just checked the water guage ht. and today july 4 it's just a little lower than it was on the trip down there on june 15. On July 3 it was pretty high but falling.
