New Years Day Paddle

Note: Bottom, photo taken last New Years Day up at Hoover. The top one was a few days before, and because of the ice; I couldn't paddle any further. Really cool!

What better way to bring in the New Year than on the water. We're going to paddle the Big Darby again for several reasons; safety and length of paddle.

We'll meet up at 12:30 so that we can shuttle a vehicle and return to put in at 1:00. We'll plan on taking out at Trapper John's for now, but may move it to 762. I plan on bringing a fire log so that we can stop half way on one of the gravel bars to warm up if needed.

The water levels are up slightly approx. 1 ft. from what they were Sat, and running at about 150cfs faster at 896cfs as oppose 741 the other day. Still going to be cold, but now they are predicting 35 instead of mid-20's.

FYI, if I have to tell you how to dress for these conditions, you most likely shouldn't even attempt it. :)

Excellent beginning to the New Year. Meg and I probably wouldn't have done this without being with a group -- thank you all for being our group. We liked the fire. Next time we'll bring marshmallows.

A cold day warmed by the comradeship of new and old friends (as well as the survival skills of Sami and Neilson)....someday, when conditions are just right, Brian WILL get 10 kayaks on his truck!! (and Susan will get pulled over by the river police and made to walk a straight line in the creek)

    2 · January 1, 2014

    • Sami

He actually got 11 kayaks today; new record. You Da Man, Brian!

What a perfect way to start 2014. Today was amazing for many reasons, one of them being that 18 "rats" actually showed for this trip; of which was totally unexpected. I'm assuming due to the temps being slightly higher than predicted.

As always it was great to see my old friends, as well as make news one. As seen in some of the pictures, I think the fire was a hit. If nothing else an awesome gathering place mid-way through our trip.

We'll have to see where our next great venture takes us. :)

I want to wish all of my true kayaking friends of the Ohio River Rats Society a Very Happy New Year !! Some may know of my bike wreck 5 years ago with my worst injury being a punctured lung with mrsa infection. Having only about 50% breathing capacity, I can't do hills or a long drag of the kayak. Thank you Jeff and Sandy for carrying my kayak up that steep hill after the Yough !! I know my limitations and try to stay away from things I can not do. Don't ever feel sorry for me. God saved my life and helped me with an amazing recovery. Kayaking and cycling helps me so much. After starting to cycle and kayak my family Dr. Aebi said "You never seize to amaze me David"
Happy New Year, Love you all
You gotta be tough to do 60 miles in 2 days !! Miss you Neilson!!

Lewis and Clark would have been proud to have had a tough hombre like you on their "paddle". Pleasure knowing ya and Happy New Year to you and all my river rat friends.... let the bourbon flow!

I'll wait to see what the water is. I don't have a wet/dry suit but would paddle flatwater depending on conditions.

I am a maybe on the Jan. 1 paddle -- if there is snow, even some on the river/creek bed, I am IN..all that brown drab brown is pooopeeee (LOL). I kind of like the idea of the water being under 5 feet ...like Princess Sandy is requesting

I would love to go but I won't be able to if its much of a drive (more than about forty min one way) my minivan is not very reliable anymore. I was sad to miss out on the Darby creek run but was sick with the flu.

Also I hadn't paid my dues since Ihhaven't been involved before and was going to pay them before the trip but I pay now will I need to again after the first? Thanks! BTW I've always wanted to thank you for the craigslist forwards you send. Super helpful!

      December 30, 2013

    • Sami

Hey Marcus, no worries. If you pay now it will not be due again for 1 year from the date of payment. I'll let everyone know by tomorrow where we'll be paddling, so stay tuned

I'm going to pass on winter boating. Maybe after I get a dry suit I'll go on a winter float. I've had enough of being belly button deep in ice cold water. By the way the insurance company totaled the truck so I went out and baught a 2006 Toyota Sequoia. It has a hitch and I am going to buy an old boat trailer and fix it up to carry kayaks just like the liveries. Come on spring time. LOL

    December 29, 2013

  • Sandy

I'm not sure if I'm in yet, waiting to see what waters are decided. Anything I can stand in is doable, anything deep I'm out.
