Continuing a trend that my event closest to my B-Day (indulge me please) as an excuse to enjoy what I consider to be the best Steak value in the DC region: the local Ray's steakhouses.

Over the years, we've cycled between the original Ray's the Steaks (and the Retro Rays next door), Ray's the Classics (Silver Spring, now sold off to employees but very much tethered to the Ray's supply chain) and the newest very-casual Ray's to the Third. Last year we went to Retro Rays, this time we'll sit in the actual Ray's the Steaks restaurant.

This will be later 8:45 pm dinner. Homage to the night owls in the group. NO COMPLAINING IF YOU SIGN-UP THAT YOU'RE STARVING. Plan your noshing accordingly :)

--> Listed on Washingtonian's 2014 Top 100 Very Best Restaurants

I won't do introductory detail about the Ray's concept or meat quality this time around, see one of our past Ray's events for that.

FOOD: Carefully-sourced prime-grade meat & seafood, trimmed & well-aged in-house for a nice value (i.e. they aren't adding an insane corporate profit-margin into the final price)

For appetizers I always recommend the excellent Crab Bisque (with Sherry) rich flavor and they don't skimp on the crab meat, love their Devilishly Good Eggs -- hand-chopped steak tartare served deviled-egg style, or their salads.

At Ray's, steaks are prepared in a variety of ways. You'll find classic "Au Poivre" (black peppercorn crust), or a few styles of spicy with various toppings (the "El Diablo" and the "Blue Devil"), and oh so many more. Even the amount of char is adjustable (i.e. the dark grill marks, & @ Ray's the  default is heavy char) too!

There are quite a few styles of steaks, ranging from a reasonably-priced Hanger Steak (a special version that's much more tender than what you'd find locally) or Top Sirloin, then moves to higher-rated cuts such as the NY Strip / Ribeye / Filet Mignon / and upward (and more limited availability cuts). At his location only, Ray's also offers higher-quality in-house 'dry aged' steaks that you'd find at the most expensive steakhouses (oh but you'll pay for it!, but it's still cheaper than those other steakhouses).

But at the Ray's steakhouses, they have more than just steaks. For example, give the Crab Royale for example a whirl -- Maryland Jumbo Lump Seasoned, Broiled and Finished with a Sherry Shallot Beurre Blanc. Think of the preparation as a semi-deconstructed crab cake.

--> View a sample menu (somewhat varies based on availability)

Oh, & maybe you want sides by-chance? Ray's include for free lightly Creamed Spinach, and Mashed Potatoes, family-style. <-- if interested, ask for the Garlic Mashed Potatoes!

And save room for dessert! My favorite here is a thick very rich Chocolate Mousse served in a wine glass. There's sometimes multiple flavors (white, milk chocolate and dark chocolate), but dark chocolate version is always available (and is considered the default as it's the most popular version). Quite addictive with a nice sweet red. The others aren't slouches though, the light Berries N Crème is a nice contrast.

Ray's wine lists used to be one of the best in the area. Unfortunately they've paired back on their program, it's good but not superlative anymore.

SPACE: Not lavish, but functions quite fine. Really, it's all about the food here ... intentionally.

For directions using the Metro, try using the Trip Planner at the WMATA website.

NOTE: Ray's is actually on the Corner Of Clarendon Boulevard and N. Wayne Street, NOT Wilson (heed this). Blame Arlington if you must :D

PARKING: Rays offers VALIDATED parking at a parking garage around the corner. (On N. Adams St, next to the Five Guys)

Need to Contact the Restaurant? [i.e. confirm location, notify to the group if running late, etc.]. Text on your phone to 466453 (GOOGLE) and type the restaurant name + the city/state in the message body. Google Business Services will text you back with the address and phone #!

************************************

1. Limited to 18 slots.

2. If you RSVP "YES" please make sure you can definitely make it. With 3,900+ members and limited seating, we cannot afford no-shows. It's unfair to the other members who would like to attend and also to the organizers who have to explain to the restaurant why the reserved # of guests didn't show (can damage our reputation). No-Show rules apply.

3. Event already full?, waitlist for the event!. Use the Waitlist option (the Organizer for each event will enable this as needed). Also, check back regularly as attendees have been known to cancel up to Noon the day of the event.

4. Billing (add 30% tax/tip to your bill). Remember, include the required 30% for tip / tax in addition to the food / beverages you order as defined in our FAQs.

5. NEW MEMBERS or 1st TIME EVENT GO-ERS, if you have questions about the group, RSVPs, or the overall dining event process, visit our FAQs and our No-Show Policy.

Joe, thanks so much for coordinating the dinner. Glad you were able to pull me from the waitlist for my first outing with the group. I had a nice time and got to chat with a few members. Thanks much. :-)

I didn't mean to be a no show. I was so looking forward to this. I got lost. I had mapquest directions but just couldn't find the restaurant. At 9:20 pm I gave up and ate my dinner alone at Kentucky Fried Chicken. I know I missed a good time and am sorry. Don't have a cell phone at the moment so couldn't call. Next time I go to Rays Steak House I'm taking metro.

Awe, we missed you Becky last night. I did have a Google Map link in the event description to make it simple. Any of the local businesses I'm sure would have directed you, else a pay phone. Sorry that you couldn't make it.
