Note the new location for this meetup - we will be meeting at the Starbucks at the S.W. corner of 16th and Arch, across the Parkway from Cappricio's. We will be in the large indoor area directly outside the main part of Starbucks.
The topic of this discussion will be the psychology of music, focusing on the issues raised in the book "This Is Your Brain On Music" by Daniel J. Levitin. Some of the questions we can discuss are:
Why do people respond to music? Does it confer an evolutionary advantage? Is it the by-product of something else that gave us an evolutionary advantage? Or is it simply a happy accident of how our brains are wired?
What determines whether we perceive a group of sounds as pleasing or not? How much of this is cultural vs. innate?
What is the relationship between what we hear as far as pitch, loudness, and timbre and the physical properties of a sound wave?
