Anthropomorphism- pros and cons

Note the new location for this meetup - we will be meeting at the Starbucks at the S.W. corner of 16th and Arch, across the Parkway from Cappricio's. We will be in the large indoor area directly outside the main part of Starbucks.

The topic of this discussion will be the pros and cons of anthropomorphism. anthropomorphism simply put, is the attribution of human motivation, characteristics, or behavior to inanimate objects, animals, or natural phenomena. During this discussion we will explore this definition and how anthropomorphism appears in science and our everyday lives. Some of the questions we can discuss are:

Is there any benefit to anthropomorphism in science or outside of science? Why do we do it? What are the pitfalls and benefits to allowing anthropomorphism?

Here is an article that might be good to get us started:

If you can gain access this is also a great article on the topic by de Waal: Frans B. M. de Waal (1999). Anthropomorphism and Anthropodenial. Philosophical Topics 27 (1). If anyone knows how to post a pdf to, let me know and I can post it.

Here is a link to a radiolab episode on Animal minds and cognition. There is an interview with Clive Wynne (author of one of the papers we discussed). Sorry I didn't post this sooner, I had forgotten abotu this episode:
