Ethical Society leader Hugh Taft Morales starts off our spring “Democracy on Trial” series by facilitating a public forum on federal power, particularly the growth of executive authority regarding national security and foreign affairs. What limits executive power regarding the detention or killing of terrorist suspects, methods interrogation, use of drones, and the withholding of information from the public? Regarding domestic affairs, has federal power been diminished due to the gridlock between Congress and the President? What is the Supreme Court’s position on the division of power? Is it an activist court or one that practices judicial restraint?
