At this meeting we will discuss separation of church and state and how it relates to the below topics (and others suggested by the group):
1) Marriage and civil unions and the rights accompanying both
2) Taxes, especially tax breaks given to any institution
3) Abortion, morning after pill, birth control
We will also discuss interpretations of the constitutional clauses as they pertain to separation of church and state. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution is part of the Bill of Rights that prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, impeding the free exercise of religion, abridging the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, interfering with the right to peaceably assemble or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances. Many legal battles have been fought over the interpretation of this amendment as it relates to separation of church and those can be debated as well. If this topic proves to be too much for one meeting we will plan a second in May.
