Nora Young is fascinated by how people adopt and apply technology in their lives. And she share her passion every week on CBC Radio One's Spark. In fact, the program has been so well received that the corporation recently announced that it will be lengthened to an hour in the autumn.

But Nora's Spark isn't just a radio program. It's also a much listened-to podcast that can be listened to at any time. And it's a blog which offers subscribers a chance to listen to the complete interviews that are edited to fit into the broadcast program and podcast. Even more, it's a blog where Nora and her production team solicit community input on story ideas that they're developing. And of course, it's also a Twitter ID that Nora and the team use to tell people about what's happening with Spark and to have conversations with them.

Nora is truly the new generation of broadcaster. As the traditional model tumbles down, as newspapers are closed, as television stations are closed and as radio budgets are cut, one thing is for sure. Nora Young will be using the media that her community has migrated to.

Nora will be our speaker at Third Tuesday Toronto on June 23. She'll be sharing with us the lessons she's learned from her journey into social media. What were the bumps? How did she overcome them? What has been most successful? Where does she see things going in the future?

If you're interested in celebrating the potential of new media and talking with someone who is showing how to bridge traditional media and social media, join us on June 23.

As always, thank you to our sponsors: Our founding sponsor, CNW Group has been joined by the Berkeley Heritage Event Venue to help us make this event possible. Thank you to our sponsors. We couldn't do Third Tuesday without you.

Event was great, people were great, talk was great... but Zoompass has some beta issues to work ... I'm with Rogers and it appears there are too many numbers in my pin to get the $10 back and try their service out. Can anyone help put me in touch with them? (no number on their website)

This was my first TTT, I really liked the feel of the venue and really felt like I came away with a couple good pointers, many of them just from chatting with people afterwards.

Who attended?

  • 137 attendees
    •  The speech and discussions were very interesting. This was my first time attending TTT and I would love to come to the next one. I didn't know what to expect going into it, but I spoke to a lot of very interesting people throughout the evening. I noticed there was a lot of discussion about Twitter and there wasn't enough time to address everyone's questions about it - if anyone needs help or would like to know more about it, please feel free to drop me a line at julie@redjuicemedia.com. I'd be happy to help you out or just discuss Twitter as a marketing platform. You can find me on Twitter @JulieTyios.
    •  Good chat. Tne networking could have used a little more organization or encouragement.
    •  Fascinating to hear Nora speak, live, of history being made --right now. Interesting to hear how radio has more flexibility than TV or print, and is therefore more compatible with the "in-the-moment" digital world.
    •  I enjoyed Nora Young's presentation and discussion.
    •  Some great insights into radio and the effect of social media on Nora's show. As she aptly pointed out, it's really about listening to their audience and incorporating their ideas. It was a good "show." ...couldn't help the pun...
    •  Seating would be better organized around tables rather than in banks of chairs - this layout cuts down on the conversational aspect of the event.
    •  Nora Young is a great presenter; she had some really cool and funny anecdotes to share and I hope that her future 1 hour radio program endeavor pans out. We need more people broadening the "average joe"s perspective of what social media and technology is truly about.
    •  I am already a huge fan/avid Spark listener, so I was excited to hear Nora speak. She is engaging, knowledgable and passionate about her craft and that definitely shines through. Excited for the next TTT. Love the event and don't mind paying the 10 bucks. Great work, organizers!
    •  Informative and well presented. Appreciated the liberal time for Q&A and discussion. Perhaps more content on how one is to make money with blogs and podcasts, and maybe some extra speculation about where this is all going. Since I'm in corporate communications, it would be interesting to hear more about how this can fit into a corpcomm plan without seeming "inauthentic." I might have also liked some discussion of just how utterly tedious is is to listen to or watch the opinions of ill-informed commenters. (Like me here?)
    •  Nora was an informative and engaging speaker. Very cool to hear a pioneer in an emerging space discuss challenges and triumphs, the politics of corporate acceptance and audience adoption. Hearing her made several of the people I spoke to nostalgic for her 4 hr DNTO sessions. Met some nice folks. I think the format could evolve a bit, but I bet that's in the works. Thanks for putting together a pleasant event.
    •  My first time at the Meetup and didn't really know what to expect. Left feeling very impressed by the speaker, organizer, venue, and people I met. Sounds like some excellent speakers and new sponsors in upcoming months. I've now reserved the third Tuesday evening every month on my daytimer for the meetup.
    •  I was already a big fan of Nora Young and Spark on CBC. It was a real thrill to hear her speak about the challenges of broadcast vs podcast
    •  Very cool to experience Nora in person. Greatly enjoyed hearing her take on all types of media.
    •  The acoustics weren't great. She had some interesting things to say but it was difficult to hear her at times.
    •  dss
    •  It was my first meetup and I was so impressed. I'll be back. Nora was very insightful, exploring some of the more profound issues involved with social media. Main takeaway: the value of building communities. Intriguing thought: men are more into the specs and women into how technology relates to people.
    •  Great to see and meet her! ONLY reason I came to Third Tuesday was Nora Young.
