You may know him as Dell's Vice President of Communities and Conversations, where he headed Dell's social media team. But since April, he's Bob Pearson, President of the Social Media Business Council, which brings together large companies to understand social media and how they can adopt it in an intelligent, effective way.

The members of the Social Media Business Council are the heads of social media at Fortune 1000 companies, including Molson, Dell, Coca-Cola, Allstate, Cisco, Ford, General Electric, H&R Block, Home Depot, Intel, Intuit, Johnson & Johnson, McDonald's, Microsoft, Petro-Canada, Pfizer, Procter & Gamble, Starbucks, UPS and Walmart.

Bob has run one of the most successful social media outreach programs during his time at Dell. Today, he rubs shoulders with the senior executives who are trying to the do the same at other big companies. At Third Tuesday Toronto, he will share his unique perspective on the right way for corporations to engage with social media. What are the largest companies hoping to achieve through social media? What are the biggest challenges they have to adopting it effectively? What works well and what doesn't seem to work?

A word about admission

We're asking attendees to pay a $10 admission fee to reserve a space at this month's Third Tuesday Toronto. When we introduced this fee at the June Third Tuesday Toronto and Third Tuesday Ottawa, we dramatically reduced the no-show rate. Having an accurate sense of how many people will attend helps the Berkeley Event Venue to have just the right number of staff for our event.

You can pay in advance either using the Paypal button on the registration page or, if you have joined Zoompass, by zooming $9.50 to (613) 866-5132. (Disclosure: Zoompass is a Thornley Fallis client.)

The admission fee will be refunded to any students who present their student card at the registration desk.

Thank you to our sponsors

Of course, there's a lot that goes into putting together Third Tuesdays. And we couldn't do it without the support of our sponsors. Sponsors for this month's event include Molson Canada, Ferg Devins thought of us when he heard Bob was coming to Toronto and arranged for him to speak to us; CNW Group, our founding sponsor; and the Berkeley Event Venue, who provide us with a fabulous and friendly place to meet.

I am interested to hear about what the Blog Council is primarily concerned with and any plans it has for the next 12 months.

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it. Knowing Bob though he has a ton of great experience to share from his past and current roles. Have fun tomorrow all.

Who attended?

  • 129 attendees
    •  Great speaker - lots of value.
    •  Loved it! It was really worth the time to hear Bob's 15 tips on effective social media communications. Really appreciated the opportunity to interface with a leader in the field, and to console myself knowing that even he doesn't have answers for everything and is learning the social media universe as it unfolds.
    •  Great foundation for establishing expectations of what social media is about as a business communications tool and what the expectations should be.
    •  Expert and Thought Leader - Fabulous gift to the Toronto Community - thnks Joseph
    •  Good speaker. Liked the 15 Rules concept. Microphone and sound system could have been better.
    •  Great insights from an out of towner on social media and fortune 500 companies! Time to start experimenting.
    •  I think his assesment and direction setting is right on. And the largest advantage and validation is that he himself has bore witness to it....as it has evolved, progressed, and now trends.
    •  This was my first meetup, but certainly won't be my last! Joe, Ferg and Bob were all fantastic. I found the Q&A particularly valuable - whether you are from a small non-profit, large organization, B2B, or B2C, there were golden nuggets for everyone. Well done!
    •  He's a really good speaker and I found him to be friendly and approachable. I really liked the quick slide presentation, and I thought his answers were thoughtful and helpful. It would have been nice to hear him talk more about how to convince the "antibodies" to get on board with social media, other than just call them antibodies. Then again, I guess I should have asked that question....
    •  Bob Pearon's presentation was an excellent, articulate speaker. He shared his experience and best practices for big business and social media openly and honestly. Invite him back for more.
    •  Bob has really compelling ideas about where social media is going. Particularly regarding the end of e-mail.
    •  Outstanding and insightful presentation. Helpful for anyone trying to engage their customers in new and innovative ways.
    •  Excellent speaker, very succinct, engaging. Knowledgeable. Took the time to answer questions with thought & insight, and honesty - if he didn't know or couldn't say, he said so. I'll be back!
    •  Bob gives a great perspective working for an organization that got it right (Dell).
    •  Pearson was really informative (and quite possibly my favourite speaker to date); yes his answers were more for companies that were directly selling products to consumers (for obvious reasons.) But for someone who is trying to make a living out of blogging (indirect sales), I still walked out of Berkeley with a lot of great ideas to implement this coming week.
    •  I am new to the social media world and I am before yesterday I did not understand the importance that the online social networking world plays with the success of a company and how that company interacts with its target audience. I agree with the statement he made that the world is not changing, it has already changed; however, the problem lies in the fact that not everybody has been able to change with it. Overall Pearson did a great job.
    •  I liked the list...more anecdotes would have been nice. Lots of good questions came out, really enjoyed that aspect of tonight's event.
    •  Bob Pearson shared the lessons he had learned leading social media at Dell. Candidly. Honestly. With humour. He's a great presenter. His presentation was followed by the best question and answer session we've had all year.
    •  Speaker was very good. Nice crowd. Dodgy location. Very uncomfortable chairs.
    •  An insightful and informative speaker, I really took a lot away from this meet up.
    •  I felt this was the best Third Tuesday event that I went to so far. Bob Pearson, as President of the Social Media Business Council, really has the pulse of social media in his hands.
    •  The presentation was excellent and questions were very valuable. Very inspiring overall.
    •  Bob shared his learning as a big business practioner and as the leader of the social media business council. He provided some terrific insight into social media for big business that was relevant to the audience. Excellent speaker and wonderful learning for the group.
    •  I really enjoyed it and I thought everyone was open to meeting and talking.
    •  very incisive. great terminology giving great access (e.g., "liquid networks")
    •  I thought the talk was very informative. It was ideal for someone like myself, who is just getting into social media from a business perspective.
    •  Good content from the speaker, helped in part by excellent questions from the audience. There is usually less information from the large corporation level at how they're using social media.
    •  Excellent insight! I couldn't stop taking notes.
