Who organized?
Joseph Thornley

He's built two successful startups, co-founded the Mesh conference, and runs Freshbooks - a company with much of interest to anyone in the agency business.

Mike McDerment, entrepreneur, Internet marketing expert, and blogger has a lot to say about Public Relations in a Web 2.0 world and the services startup companies need from their agency partners. Having worked with consultants from both ends of the spectrum ? from independent agents to huge multinational PR agencies ? Mike has some clear ideas about what works and what doesn?t at the various stages in the evolution of a company. He?s learned how and when to use external PR services; how to be alert for conversations work within the blogosphere and know when and how to join them; and why sending someone in Fiji a box of Triscuits can sometimes get you much more attention than sending out a news release.

In addition, his company is emerging as one of the leading online time-tracking and billing services for professional services firms. Mike?s experience at Freshbooks has given him some insight into the pressures on the agency side, and his team has responded by building a better product. But he?s not coming to Third Tuesday to do a product pitch.

Come out an here Mike speak about the challenges of creating awareness for a relatively young software company, how PR can help, and the role played by Social Media in his Freshbooks? overall growth strategy.

Once again, we're thankful to our sponsor, CNW Group, whose financial support makes it possible to run Third Tuesdays in Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa and Montreal as FREE events. Thank you to CNW for supporting the Canadian social media community.

Looking forward to my first Meet-up! And in the market for a PR person... may be a person or two at this event that fit the bill :-)

Who attended?

  • 100 attendees
    •  Have to admit this was by far the most interactive and informative event so far - kudos to the organizers as well as your major sponsor for making this happen. Best of luck on "Road Burn" Saul and Michael...I'll be tuning in to hear about the latest adventures...and looking forward to the next Third Tuesday. Cheers, Andy
    •  Excellent dialogue with the audience. Got a good feel for Freshbooks' building of their brand.
    •  It was my first one...I'll come back again. Great job!
    •  Very engaging and entertaining speakers! Very social media-related. Once again, good choice of venue :)
    •  I missed the first 10-15 minutes of their presentation, however they made some really good points about aligning the culture of the corporation with it's employees and vice-versa.
    •  Very interesting to learn about the beginnings of Freshbooks. As an existing client, a lot of the rest was familiar to me.
    •  Mike McDerment and Saul Colt gave us real insight into a startup company that uses social media to project its personality to the world. Most interesting insight: pay per click is at the core of their promotion; social media (which they do themselves) is next in importance. Traditional PR follows both of these. Hmmm. It's not 1999 anymore!
    •  Michael and Saul were fabulous speakers. Their passion about FreshBooks was evidenced by their every word and they had an engaging story to tell. Michael's comments also provided a interesting perspective on PR and savvy start-ups in the age of social media.
    •  Best I've been to yet. Excellent, charming, intelligent guests, both of whom get it. Would loved to have seen more from the audience. The host, whoever he is, is fantastic. Love to see hear more of these on the web. And look forward to looking at the twits. Could be some work done with the lights and sound, especially when you begin the vlog, which sol said you were about to do.
    •  Very well done, great insights on customer service and brand building. Would have loved to hear a little more about the start up story and its evolution, though.
    •  Great insights about the "culture" of good customer service.
    •  Great speakers, great group
