Joseph Thornley

One of the real pioneers in social media, Steve Rubel, is coming to Third Tuesday Toronto on November 24.

Steve's blog, Micropersuasion, has been a must-read from his very first post in 2004. Today, he continues to consistently chart in the top 10 of the AdAge Power 150.

This past summer, Steve wowed the attendees at the IABC's International Conference with his presentation on the trends he's watching. His Third Tuesday presentation will update this view over the horizon.

We know that lots of people will want to meet and hear Steve. So, we're moving this month's event to a larger venue, Pravda.

If you'd like to hear and meet one of social media's true pioneers, RSVP to reserve your place.

Thanks again to our national sponsor, CNW Group, for enabling us to keep Third Tuesday a free community-based event.

THe venue is much nicer than the pub used in previous meetings. The format was poor and lacked structure for the speaker to deliver a sound message. I was hoping for more substance really!

    Nice location, Joe! :D

Who attended?

  • 200 attendees
    •  Excellent mix of presentation and Q&A. Kept up a lively discussion for over an hour.
    •  Great insights and conversation, great venue.
    •  wasn't what i expected, however, everyone else seemed to enjoy it
    •  Entertaining, insightful, excellent as always
    •  One of the most informative and expert discussions of the topic since social media caught my attention 3 years ago. Mr. Rubel's sage advice (that it wasn't for everyone), insightful business observations, and amusing anecdotes-banter with both the host and the audience made his chat into a production. Well done!
    •  Enlightening conversation. The layout of the room was not conducive for many audience questions though.
    •  Knowledgeable speaker, some good questions were asked. Overall a positive experience.
    •  Good casual discussion from Steve and great networking.
    •  I really liked the adundant q&a rather than formal talk.
    •  Great speaker. Steve is not only one of the most knowledgeable people in this space, he's also very grounded about its role. It's always refreshing to hear what he has to say.
    •  Steve's discussion got me thinking, often indirectly, about some really important ideas. His experience brought a bunch to the table.
    •  Good insight to the future of monitoring social media and on line reputation. I'm glad I attended.
    •  I didn't think our usual Q&A format worked quite as well this time out. Possibly because the group was larger, it would have been better if Rubel spoke to start before throwing it out to questions. I didn't learn a lot at this meeting because we too many of the "same old" questions unfortunately.
    •  Great turnout. Photos available for download at www.peterwestphoto.ca and comment at www.peterwestphoto.com Any use beyond viewing please include a photo credit.
    •  I like the talk-show format and the Q & A afterward was great.
    •  I was really impressed with his off-the-cuff observations and, not surprisingly, his knowledge about the state of the internet and social media. It's always odd when presenters begin with "schtick" because it pretty much always struggles, but the intention is endearing. I think the moderator was great, and the audience questions brought a lot of interesting topics to the floor. They were deftly handled by Rubel with insight and honesty—it really was an educational exchange.
    •  It was very hot and crowded and sometimes hard to hear but a good conversation took place.
    •  He had some interesting things to say but it took a while to get to them. The venue wasn't really conducive to a real dialogue. I would have liked to hear more about where social media is going, rather than that Shaq has a Twitter.

So, is 'Content is King' over, passe, and I didn't get the memo (twitter feed)? I don't doubt Mr. Rubel knows his stuff; am just sorry we didn't get to hear anything but very broad, generic non-specifics. Partly the "faux" interview format is to blame. Perhaps a 10-15 min talk first, ask questions later format would have generated more insights or revelations. A disappointing evening of 45 min of waiting for very little insight or "new". Thanks for trying, though.
    •  Steve had some great insights to share - but you could have given the poor guy a seat!
