PLEASE NOTE: Due to St. Patrick's Day, this month's THIRD TUESDAY is on Monday the 16th...

Unfortunately, John Chow had a family matter come up, so Nate Elliott of Forrester will be stepping in for March's Third Tuesday event. John will be speaking at May's Third Tuesday event, instead.

Online users trust the advice of other users — even those they've never met — more than they trust any other source of information, including product Web sites, advertisements, newspaper and magazine articles, and professional product reviews. And thanks to the growing popularity of social media, more people now influence each other in more ways than ever before. But as millions more users flock to social media, the sheer volume of reviews, recommendations and advice will start to become overwhelming — we'll all be lost in a sea of influence.

In this session, Forrester Principal Analyst Nate Elliott will analyze how influence works today, and present his vision for the future of influence: how users will return their focus to the advice of those they trust the most; how users will seek out tools that help them filter the influential messages that are most relevant to them; and how the sites, services, and vendors who find ways to help users put reviews and advice into proper context will win the attention and adoration of the online world.

About Nate Elliott
Nate brings more than a decade of experience in online marketing and media to his work, including roles with DoubleClick, Adobe, and the IAB, as well as nearly six years of experience at JupiterResearch and Forrester Research. He is a native of Syracuse, NY, and a graduate of Cornell University. He lives in Vancouver, BC.

Nate was really good. He really does know his stuff very well. If I may suggest a change in format, in the future, Third Tuesday talks should be left to let the speaker do his talk instead of getting interrupted (which is what made the talk feel longer as Marc indicates). Nate is an extremely articulate speaker and for a next talk, he just should talk and then answer questions. Overall, as usual, it was a great success and a fantastic event. Thank you Tanya, as always!

Good times were had, but I forgot to factor in the fact that REAL women will be there. Thus my wallflowerness

How late will this be going?

Who attended?

  • 120 attendees
    •  Thought it was great. I am interested in the future of Search, and I think a few points Nate made point in that direction. Interesting too that the issues of privacy have a lot to bear on that future, something he also mentioned. It was a fascinating talk.
    •  It was great, I came in a bit late (respectively) and everyone was already in conversation. I am an Art Student/ Blogger/ Novelist, dont act surprised that I have no social skills...
    •  Brilliant speaker, absolutely informative presentation
    •  Really enjoyed Nate's talk. He presented a great overview of the current state of influence online and shared well-thought out ideas about where it's headed. And he was a good speaker to boot! Rating and reviewing a talk about online influence is so meta. (-:
    •  The subject matter was very current and well presented.
    •  Nate knows his stuff and is a qualified speaker. This was my first "Third Tuesday" so I have little to base my evaluation on. Bottom line, I will definitely go to another one, get there earlier and try to meet more of the great people there.
    •  Nate was an excellent speaker. He gave an enjoyable and interesting talk.
    •  Nate was one of the best speakers I have seen. A seasoned vet, he spoke clearly, laughed, engaged the audience and was a pleasure to watch. Congrats for getting such a great speaker - I will definitely tell a friend.
    •  The topic was perfect for the audience and Nate is an excellent speaker. There was a lot of audience interaction, always a good sign, and Nate handled the questions well.

Nate was great! He gave a very good intro to his research on "online influence" and how this has evolved and where its headed. People I met were interesting and open.
    •  Nate Elliott is a very smart individual and has a lot of wisdom to share. His presentation was well put together and he was very well spoken. I had seen this presentation before at Northern Voice 09 but it was a nice refresher. He also handled and answered questions extremely well. However, afterward there is never much effort to get to know new individuals. People group off into their familiar groups of peers and it is almost impossible to break that barrier to introduce yourself.
    •  Fantastic Speaker.
    •  fairly informative and on some points I've a different views, that's okay.
    •  Excellent presentation, very good speaker. I couldn't stick around after to mingle, but a very good event.
    •  Nate shared some very useful info. I specialize in helping companies leverage Olympic momentum, so the science of influence is an important element of our strategy. Wharton recently published a study re influence that touched on some of the issues Nate covered, plus a few other tasty bits . . . http://knowledge.... Thanks Tanya - once again . . . well done
    •  What Nate covered is extremely important and will become even more so as more and more citizens express themselves in online communities. What I took away was how important trust is. That's a foundational element of any relationship of course but especially when many of us in this sphere have to develop it without the benefit of the normal social cues that exist in RL.
    •  nice guy but the talk was way too long, any presentation over 15 minutes in length should have seating for everyone otherwise ppl fidget and then lose interest. There was very little time to really meet ppl before the talk started and honestly the light was so low the ppl I knew I had a hard time finding.
    •  I found Nate Elliott to be an excellent speaker talking about very relevant material that is applicable to many areas of business. I myself will be following his advice very closely in terms of generating my own 'influence'.
