TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR! $10

Shel Israel is launching his new book, Twitterville, in Canada at Third Tuesday meetups in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver.

Three years ago, Shel co-authored Naked Conversations with Robert Scoble. Naked Conversations was a must-read book in 2006. It captured the zeitgeist of the blogosphere.

Now Shel Israel is back with Twitterville, his look at Twitter and how it is being used by people and organizations to connect, play, share, create community, organize… You name it and we’re finding a way to do it on Twitter.

Shel was the very first speaker at the inaugural Third Tuesday in 2006. So, launching Twitterville at Third Tuesday is like Shel coming home.

This event shouldn't be missed! Shel will spark your imagination, and give you ideas about how you can use Twitter and other social media in your business and life.

A word about admission
We're asking attendees to pay a $10 admission fee to reserve a space at this month's Third Tuesday to cover the venue cost.

Get a copy of Twitterville signed by Shel
Registered Third Tuesday attendees have a chance to get a copy of the book for only $10 plus your Third Tuesday admission. Even better, Shel will sign each of these books prior to the event and include a personal message for each person who has pre-ordered the book.

If you'd like to take advantage of this offer, zoom $10 to Joseph Thornley (613) 866-5132 using Zoompass. (Write "Twitterville Vancouver" in the note section.) Joe will order a book for you and Shel will have it ready for you at the event with a personal message

Thank you to our sponsors
We’re able to bring Shel to cities across Canada thanks to the support of our Third Tuesday sponsors:

CNW Group, our founding sponsor;
Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, who are providing accommodation for Shel;
Molson Canada, whose use of social media Shel has profiled in Twitterville;
Rogers Communications, whose network provides us with both landline and mobile Internet access; and
Radian6, who provide us with the tools we need to monitor and measure social media.

Thanks to each of these sponsors, Shel’s Canadian book launch will be just the first of several exciting initiatives we’re planning for the coming year.

SEE YOU THERE!

PLEASE NOTE: Due to St. Patrick's Day, this month's THIRD TUESDAY is on Monday the 16th...

Unfortunately, John Chow had a family matter come up, so Nate Elliott of Forrester will be stepping in for March's Third Tuesday event. John will be speaking at May's Third Tuesday event, instead.

Online users trust the advice of other users — even those they've never met — more than they trust any other source of information, including product Web sites, advertisements, newspaper and magazine articles, and professional product reviews. And thanks to the growing popularity of social media, more people now influence each other in more ways than ever before. But as millions more users flock to social media, the sheer volume of reviews, recommendations and advice will start to become overwhelming — we'll all be lost in a sea of influence.

In this session, Forrester Principal Analyst Nate Elliott will analyze how influence works today, and present his vision for the future of influence: how users will return their focus to the advice of those they trust the most; how users will seek out tools that help them filter the influential messages that are most relevant to them; and how the sites, services, and vendors who find ways to help users put reviews and advice into proper context will win the attention and adoration of the online world.

About Nate Elliott
Nate brings more than a decade of experience in online marketing and media to his work, including roles with DoubleClick, Adobe, and the IAB, as well as nearly six years of experience at JupiterResearch and Forrester Research. He is a native of Syracuse, NY, and a graduate of Cornell University. He lives in Vancouver, BC.

Your blog is your personal brand, it's your own corner of cyberspace with which you can express your thoughts, opinions, fears, hopes and dreams. It's also an outlet for you to share what you are passionate about - making you an authority in your own right and this will ultimately help you build your audience. You don't have to be an expert, you don't have to know it all, but your voice is very personal and the way you express it will become your calling card - giving you your online reputation.

Rebecca will be addressing 'blog branding' questions like: How do you get an audience to begin with? How do you keep that audience? How to get noticed by mainstream media (should I even care about mainsteam media) and, why should I have a brand?

Rebecca Bollwitt has been blogging about Vancouver since 2004 on Miss604.com, and podcasting since 2005. She has recently been listed as one of the top "Web influencers in Vancouver" by NowPublic and the Vancouver Sun and has a weekly segment on-air with Talk 1410am, discussing the latest in the Vancouver blogosphere. In 2008 she co-founded sixty4media, offering social media consulting services from custom WordPress themes, audio serivces for podcasts, video screencast production, as well as event liveblogging and blogging tutorials.

Live blogging of this event will be done by Raul -- Thanks Raul! Please see http://hummingbird604.com during/after the event...

Mhairi Petrovic talks about "Overcoming the challenges of marketing new media to traditional decision makers."

The evolution of the Internet has brought about many changes in the way we do business: marketing in particular has seen a sea change as new methods of interacting with target audiences have come to the fore. Many senior decision makers today, however, come from a traditional marketing background and are hesitant to adopt new media marketing techniques. This talk will discuss the common objections old school marketers have to new media and how you can use the basic principles of traditional marketing to educate them to the new way of doing things.

Mhairi Petrovic is Chief Marketing Orchestrator and Founder of Out-Smarts Internet Marketing - a company dedicated to working with small to medium sized businesses to maximize their Internet exposure. Passionate about social media, Mhairi blogs and podcasts regularly and puts her knowledge of the Internet to good use to develop and implement innovative Internet marketing campaigns.

OUR LIVE BLOGGING SPONSOR, Rebecca Bolwitt of Miss604.com is doing something special for this THIRD TUESDAY:

With so many talented and motivated attendees each month, the Third Tuesday event has the collective power to make such a difference in our fair city. As such, I won't simply be liveblogging the next event on October 21st, I'll also be collecting donations of non-perishable food items for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank - an organization that serves up to 25,000 people each week through 16 depots across the entire region.

Come and share, listen, network, and bring in your soup cans, KD Mac n' Cheese, baby food, and other items to donate to this very worthy cause.

Please note, due to another social media event on Tuesday, David Jones of Hill & Knowlton will be speaking on Monday for September's THIRD TUESDAY VANCOUVER.

We hear the horror stories of fake blogs, spam pitches and general ignorance of the social media community by PR practitioners who leap into the online space without first understanding what it is and why it’s different. David will talk about how Hill & Knowlton approaches the online space and how it’s incorporated into virtually every PR program they execute on behalf of companies like HP, Motorola, Bayer and Molson.

David Jones is vice president, digital communications at Hill & Knowlton in Toronto. Prior to H&K, Mr. Jones was the group head, marketing communications at Fleishman-Hillard Toronto where he provided senior counsel to Yahoo! Canada, Pepsico, Frito-Lay, Score Media and the Movie Network. Before joining Fleishman-Hillard, Mr. Jones became vice president at the Thornley Fallis Group in Toronto in 1997, where he led the marketing communications and financial groups and was a key contributor to the firm’s leadership in adopting and evangelizing social media as a communications tool. Mr. Jones joined Molson Canada in 2002 as the brewery’s Director of Public Relations for English Canada. While at Molson, David acted as the primary media spokesperson, while also coaching and developing many of its senior executives’ media abilities. He returned to Thornley Fallis in 2005 to co-lead the Visa Canada business and oversee a diverse range of clients including Travelocity.ca, Van Houtte Coffee, Executive Risk Governance Advisors and the Ontario Government.

An early-adopter of using social media for PR purposes, Mr. Jones authors a popular Canadian PR blog (prworks.ca) and co-hosts the weekly Inside PR podcast (insidepr.ca) and is a frequent speaker at communications conferences on how to use social media as an effective PR tool.
