Tubing in Helen & picnic afterwards

Cool River tubing company - We had such a wonderful time as a group doing the same twice last year, and many of you have been asking me when is the next one. Well here we are; hot days and cool river tubing will be fun.

What : Drift down the lazy and shallow river in an open or closed bottom tube. We will picnic, socialize, & chill at the end. They also have showers and restrooms.

You don't have to tube to join. You can sit by the river and enjoy all the happy faces.
We can also use a volunteer to take pictures when the group gets to finish.

Group rate - Individual 1 trip Long or short is $5.50(with fee); however group of 10 or more is $4.45 (inclusive of tax and Paypal fee). Last year we had close to 100 attend.

What to wear? - Shorts and T-shirts or swimsuit, securely fitting shoes; Flip Flops or sandals are not recommended as you might have to get up and walk the shallow and slippery rock bottom.

What to bring? - Towel x2, change of clothes, sun screen, hat, shades (something you won't miss in case you loose them in water), food/drinks, cooler (for picnic after), and whatever else you need for day on the water.

What not to bring? - Jewelry, watches, things you will miss if you dropped, damaged, or lost in water; your call. No glass bottles, plastic water bottles are ok.

What happens if it rains? - Tubing is rain or shine unless it is thundering and lightning. In that we wait it out as they go on till late.

1st time Tubing? – No problem, I’ve been there many times over the years so I’ll try my best to answer frequently asked questions:

· First off the river in Helen is mostly shallow with only a few spots you can’t stand up. So shallow, that on times you will need to get up and move tube off rocks and into moving water . A 5’ stick comes in handy to push off rocks. Cool River sells nice wood or Plastic sticks for $5-10 (souvenir) but you can bring your own.

· Cool River will provide you a life jacket, open or close bottom tube, and ties (if you need).

·  After we pay, we will get our hands stamped; get a tube of your choice (close or open bottom); board their bus which will drop us up-river along with tubes.

· You can leave your keys at the desk when checking in.
They do have ties you can borrow (generally for kids) to tie the tubes up, but not necessary.

· Majority of the slow moving river (depending on the water level) is shaded by trees on the bank. Along the way we’ll pass vacation homes, a haunted house, bridges, water slide, restaurants with live music, a tree of lost soles(shoes found), and a couple of small rapids with one decent one right after we pass the main Helen bridge; which is lot of fun; however if you rather walk it, I’ll point out where, if you are close to me.  When you hear live music, stick around and see if we can get the group together again, as everyone will be all over the place.

· We end the journey same place we started.

· If we have some members waiting on shore, they can take the group’s pictures. I’ll have my water proof camera with me too.  If you don’t want your picture taken, turn around or we’ll do our best to frame you out.

· River time is about 2 to 3 hours, depending on recent rains.

· Once back, they do have few showers and changing rooms as well as many picnic tables.

Potluck - Please bring a dish, snack, or your specialty food to share with the group. I’m bringing some snacks (chips, Humus, cookies, granola bars, nuts etc) for all. They do have charcoal grills if you need to cook or warm something.

Music – Last year our member John brought his DJ like speaker, which was wonderful entertainment during picnic. If you have something like that where you can plug in an iPhone or other MP3 player, please indicate in your RSVP.

If you still have questions, email me and I’ll be happy to respond personally or in Comments section.

Carpool - Please post if you can take others with you; how many and which location. Primary location is Cumberland Mall/Costco parking at 8.45am and we’ll leave there at 9.00am sharp. Second location is ‘Park n Ride’ on Mansell rd exit#8 off Hwy-400 at 9.25am, and leave at 9.35am sharp.

Addresses for Carpool1 –8.45am - 2900 Cumberland Mall, Atlanta, GA ”. Parking to the right of Costco gas station near bridge.

Addresses for Carpool2 - 9.25am – “ 1701 Mansell Road, Roswell, GA ”. Near the 2nd lamp post from entrance.

Beautiful day spent with great people having fun together... what else can you ask for? I had a great time and really enjoyed myself. Thanks to Karen and Nancy for the ride up and the awesome conversations. Thanks to Bob and company for the hard work getting it all set up. And thanks to the entire group for a well laid out picnic spread.

If you want to meet unpretentious people (like I do) then this was a great meetup. Anyone that will hang around and socialize after being drenched in a river all afternoon is my kind of person. Don't get me wrong, I am also signed up to go to Opera for a dressed up meetup, but I figure if you meet someone after tubing for 3 hours it is all uphill looks-wise from there.

Bob M. and Shaun, The e-mail came to rate the event, and tell what we thought, so....

As to events, I've hosted MANY here at my home, with probably 175 people here one time. So yes, I know first hand it is a lot of work, and I do appreciate the event organizers. It can be a thankless, non paid position at times.

Anyone bitchy should host next one. That's how we do it at Church. I do agree things took too long but at least you stepped up and made an event happen. Thank you and thanks everyone for being good people. I don't know who it is but MargariitaVille was a good river mate. Should chat more. Thank you everyone for letting me join your group in the river, was so fun

I had a great time. It was mighty crowded and a bit delayed, but it was great to get on the river and do the tube thing. We didn't attend the potluck afterwards mainly due to having to get back for evening events, and just finished and got to the car before the rain hit. Thanks for organizing everything, all you organizing folks!

Way too much fun with awesome friends and great helpers stepping up to help check-in 100 members. I appreciate all the kind words and support as you can empathize to what it takes to pull together and execute an event of this size; to coordinate carpool, tubing, picnic, and tour of the town. We were still checking-in people that arrived as late as 11.45, even though deadline was 11.15. I have never seen Helen this packed with people, but crowds can be fun for people watching:). Thanks everyone for making it memorable.

A lot of standing around with no one knowing what's going on. Arrived at about 1045, and by noon group still not ready to leave. Had another activity later in the afternoon so had to go on our own and miss the picnic. Know what to expect (all day) if go again.

    July 31, 2011

I probably got 20 e-mails with questions about the SIMPLE task of carpooling, to see if there'd be room for them, or that they could drive and take 2 more if anyone wanted to go with them, etc. Just have people meet at certain locations, at certain times, and be done! If only 1 car shows up, guess what? ...you're driving. If 2 cars show up.... pick a driver. If 30 cars show up.... at least 8 drivers will need to volunteer to drive.

We got to the actual tubing (in the river) waaaay too late. The goal was to get to Helen by 11 AM. But by the time we got into the water, was 1 PM, I think. By the time we got back, it was 4 PM. I was starving, lightheaded, and already starting to shake a bit.

Bob is a great organizer, but the group was too big. Waited around to get started with the tubing too long. Stuck on a bus that stopped with no air and gas fumes coming in the windows. Fortunately, any longer it would have been unbearable. I did not go to the picnic, as it was too much to organize going here and bringing food. Also, I felt the food would spoil in the car unless you had a cooler with icepacks.

I truly enjoyed tubing. This was my first event with meetup and my first time tubing. I really enjoyed the event. Besides the hot weather everything was great. I hope we can do this again soon. I also met some wonderful people meetup members. I look forward to hanging out again real soon.

Re-confirmed our reservation and payment with Cool River Tubing. They'll try to get 1-2 dedicated buses for our group only, to take us up-river from their office. Again, please DON'T BE LATE. We hate to leave anyone behind. If you are driving straight, we'll be under the stairs, near the street. If you are new to the group, and/or don't have a face picture on Meetup, please print your Paypal confirmation as your ticket to expedite the process.

Donna, there is no wait list however you can keep an eye out for cancellation and RSVP to join the group. There is one opening right now. And for anyone that paid and cannot go, tonight 11pm is the last you can request a refund by sending me email with the full name used to pay with PayPal. This is not an automatic process and I have to request a refund on your behalf & takes time. If I don't have the correct full name; & matching the member on "NO" list, the refund can not be issued. Thanks.
