Siphon Draw to Flatiron Dayhike & BBQ
Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009
Leader: David Anderson (bdanderson53@msn.com)
Length: 6.5 miles +/- RT
Rating: Difficult (Or "easy" then, "moderate", then "DIFFICULT")
Elev Gain: Plenty. 2,625 feet
Car pool location and Time: 7:15 a.m. to leave at 7:30. Meet at Basha's at Ellsworth & Brown, Mesa AZ, west side of the parking lot, against the wall.
PLEASE state in your RSVP whether you will meet at Basha's or the trailhead.
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY.

The rugged beauty of the Superstition Wilderness contrasts with soaring, spectacular views of the Phoenix metro area on this hike on Siphon Draw Trail, and on to the Flatiron, a large protrusion on the western face of the Superstion Range. The view from the Flatiron is unforgetable. The hike will be 6.5 miles in length in an out and back format.

Don't let the distance fool you. This is a difficult hike, if you go all the way to the Flatiron, and involves climbing, scrambling and boulder hopping. You may, however, stop at any point, enjoy where you are, and return the way you came. (And you may secure a covered pavillion for us, if you can stay for the BBQ, but try to coordinate this so we don't have several pavillions, at different places).

The hike starts off easy, rising gradually, then somewhat more steeply. After that it is very steep and involves climbing, boulder hopping and scrambling. The last mile of our outbound hike will gain 1,500 feet in one mile.
You may do as much or as little of this hike as you wish, and then join us for the picnic.

Link to the park: http://azstateparks.com/Parks/LODU/

Directions to the trailhead:Take U.S. 60 to Idaho Road and go north for 2.25 miles to SR88, the Apache Trail. Turn NE on SR88 and continue 5 mile to the entrance to Lost Dutchman Park and follow the signs to the Siphon Draw Trailhead.

There is a ($6.00?) fee per vehicle so let's carpool if possible.

Bring a breathable rainsuit (or at least a rainsuit), good foot-gear, lots of water, food for the hike, hat, sunscreen, and a dish to share at the BBQ, and maybe folding chairs. We are hoping to occupy a covered pavillion with a grill after the hike. Musical instruments, skits, tall tales, or other entertainment are encouraged.

Family, friends, and significant others that do not hike are welcome to attend the picnic after the hike. I will provide charcoal, lighter fluid. Can anyone bring a portable grill, just in case we need it? Let me know.

Shackleton's Antartic Adventure
REI Paradise Valley

SHACKLETON'S PHOTOGRAPHER

In 1914, Sir Earnest Shackleton set-out aboard Endurance to attempt the first 1,600-mile trek across Antarctica. His ship never reached land. Shackleton's epic journey became the greatest adventure story ever told. Come learn about this true, amazing story of the Endurance and the expedition photographer Frank Hurley who caught it all on film. See the story for yourself. Author Shane Murphy has studied the Endurance expedition for over 20 years and has written three books on Hurley's work.
