Bear Mountain

Saturday February 16, 2013

Carpool 7:30am, Hike 9:30am

Strenuous 5 miles RT

Bear with me again on this difficult but rewarding climb to the summit of Bear Mountain! With an elevation gain of 1,803 feet, this trek is a challenging heart-pumper consisting of four levels or "steps" to a summit with panoramic views of Flagstaff's snow-capped peaks! After crossing two washes, the trail starts a gradual ascent and then begins a 450 foot switchback that is steep and rocky. SOME MINOR ROCK SCRAMBLING IS REQUIRED! After a couple of false summits along the way, you reach the true top at 6,453 feet! Optional lunch afterwards at Olde Sedona 1405 W. Hwy 89A Sedona[masked]

Carpool: 7:30am Bagel Gourmet 16845 N. 29th Ave #4 Phoenix 85053 located at the West end of the Fry's Shopping Center.

Directions to Trailhead: From the "Y" Roundabout in Sedona, bear Left on 89A. Turn Right on Dry Creek Road and follow to the end. Bear Left again on 152C and then another Left on Boyton Canyon Road. The trailhead parking lot is shared with Doe Mountain Trailhead and is on the left side of the road. Restrooms at trailhead. RED ROCK PASSES REQUIRED!We will stop at the Ranger Station in Oak Creek Village for those who do not have annual Red Rock or other applicable passes.

Bring: 3-4 liters water, snacks, camera, gloves/hat (Bear hats encouraged on this one) & $1 voluntary donation to the 3H fund.
