Picket Post Mountain - Tonto National Forest

  • Mar 16, 2013 · 8:00 AM

This is a short 4 mile hike in the Tonto National Forest, with significant elevation gain. Some route finding skills and boulder scrambling required. I would recommend bringing gloves. This hike would be considered moderately difficult.

Carpool: 7:15AM departure time - Home Depot on Power and Superstition Springs Blvd, behind the Burger King. (6838 E Superstition Sprg Mesa, AZ 85209)

Hike start time: 8AM sharp!

There are volt toilets at the trail head. Off road vehicles not required, but high clearance doesn't hurt. Passenger cars can make it to the trail head, just drive slow over the rough parts.

Directions to the trail head: From Phoenix, drive east on route 60 towards the small town of Superior. Drive 0.5 miles past mile marker 221 and turn right (south) on Forest Road (FR) #231 (the intersection is marked with a sign for Picket Post). Drive 0.4 miles to a signed junction with FR #310. Turn left, remaining on FR #231, and drive 0.6 miles to the huge Picketpost parking area. If you reach Boyce Thompson, you have gone too far on US 60.

Due to scrambling, I would not recommend bringing your dog. As always, bring plenty of water and snacks. You might want to bring a camera, for the views as well.

Thanks Scott and Nick, glad you enjoyed the hike. Sandy, I'm sorry you had to wait so long, for your carpool.

If Sophia has her own Meet up account, I would be a little concerned.... :-) I'm not bringing mine, they are too heavy to lift in the difficult sections.

Of course, I a member. I have been to at least a couple dozen hikes with 3H. I am actually a member of 5 different meetups.
