Tom's Thumb from Gateway Trailhead

Tom's Thumb and Tom's Thumb!  We'll hike Tom's Thumb then go to Tom's Thumb for lunch.  Tom's Thumb is the coolest hike and Tom's Thumb is the coolest deli/bbq/carwash/gas station.

Length:  about 11-13 miles; we'll go out and back - I'm never quite clear the mileage, but it's a terrific hike (and who's counting?)

Elevation gain: about 1400 feet according to the MMP map

Time: about 5 hours of hiking, then lunch

Difficulty: yup!  Lots of steep switchbacks

Dog friendly: yes, on leash, but be sure your dog is fit too.  I wouldn't recommend it for most pooches I know.

Fitness level:  You want to be fit for this one!  It's long, with lots of upward slope and then very very steep in parts.  No bouldering/climbing, just steep trail.  This isn't a fitness hike exactly, but we tend to keep a good solid pace.  You'll be happiest on this if you've hiked with me before and like my pace, or you've done lots of brisk hiking recently.  I don't recommend this for beginners.

What to bring:  WATER and lots of it; hat, sunscreen and lunch money.  Our lunch place is:

http://www.tomsthumbfreshmarket.com/   Let me know if you're coming for lunch so I can reserve a table.

So where is the coolest deli/bbq/carwash/gas station located? Did TT and was looking forward to it. You are too fast for me now or I would have liked to have gone with you.

Brenda and group...my guest and I, and I think Shelley H will start with the group, but, due to time restrictions and the fact that I want a good fitness hike with Brenda =-), but, am not necessarily in top form, we will probably hike to the top of the first mtn and return on our own without going the additional distance to the Thumb. We won't be doing lunch with the group.

Brenda, does this hike start by going up the "lookout trail"? I have hiked that with you before and am using the maps trying to figure out where this is. I see the Tom's Thumb east end loop on the website. Is that the trail? If so, does it go up the lookout trail? and continue on over that mountain?

This one starts at Gateway Trailhead, follows Gateway Loop to Windgate Pass, then hooks up with Tom's Thumb. This shows the Gateway area but stops short of showing Tom's Thumb http://www.scottsdale...

Just had dinner from Tom's Thumb Market - it's great! Very tasty BBQ. Plus got my car washed - couldn't wait. I'm happy - they did a great job. This is turning out to be a cool spot in my 'hood.

Tom's Thumb Market also offers carwash. So I'm going to wait (procrastinate) washing my car till this day, and let them do the dirty work while we lunch.

The easiest directions to the trailhead: take 101 to Pima exit, go north on Pima to Legacy Blvd, go east to Thompson Peak. Go south for about 2-4 blocks and see Gateway on the left (east) right across from Toll Brothers development. For map, google McDowell Sonoran Preserve Gateway Trailhead. If anyone wants to carpool, please leave messages here.
