Scarlett Canyon Traverse (5thTAW Hike)

This short loop is a favorite with our crowd and it's super easy access from the 101.

Although not an official, maintained city trail, the locals have been beating in this interesting and tight route that tops out at a beacon tower at 2050 feet. Route will give us a nice level warm up, then take us up over a ridge with a commanding view of Deer Valley airport where we can watch the Pan Am Flight Academy students turn final below our view perch. This is a chance to check out one of the city's unofficial and hidden gems. Shorter distance than our regular hikes but don't count this trail out. It's steep and twisty.

Distance: 2.8 miles

Duration: 1:20

Elevation Gain: 680'

Trail conditions: Tight, unmaintained but solid trail with steep sections.

Rating: Moderate - Difficult (would be moderate but for steep sections and slippery decomposed granite trail surface)

Equipment: Sturdy broken in hiking shoes, at least some water.

Directions: From Westbound loop 101 - Exit Cave Creek Road and continue on the service road to 16th St.  (If Eastbound on 101, exit 7th St, continue to 16th st. Go left under the 101) then Turn (North) into Scarlett Canyon and go right on Runion.Continue to the Tee intersection and park. Use the private address above to get you NEAR the meeting spot.

Guys, I won't make it today. Doc says I have two fractured toes. I will be there at the trail head to see you off. I will check and make sure Al knows the way.
