How about two hikes in one! We will head out to the petroglyphs along Hieroglyphics Trail, and then, for those interested, head down a portion of the Lost Gold Mine Trail. Of course, this side trip is purely optional, and totally fun!
This is considered by most to be an "easy" hike in the Valley. While some people can (and do) run this trail, others may find it more difficult. Of course, this all depends on one's condition. This hike has about 600 feet elevation gain. Yet, relatively speaking, and especially as it relates to the Superstitions, this is considered an easy hike.
The petroglyphs will be at the end of the trail, and are considered some of the most spectacular in the Valley. This is generally considered a two hour hike. That includes spending a half hour or so at the petroglyph site. Having said that, it all depends on the group. We may be faster or slower depending on our composition. We always have all levels of abilities on these hikes. That is the nature of group hikes. However, if you have always wanted to try hiking, but been apprehensive of your abilities relative to a group, this is your hike!
This hike is 3.5 miles round trip in an out and back format. As such, one could always turn around or wait for the group to return if they find the hike too strenuous. However, we pride ourselves on leading hikes at a pace that makes sense for the group. We like to keep together, and enjoy each others company as we explore the Superstition Mountains. As such, this will be considered a slow hike for some, and maybe a bit fast for others. Still, understand, we do not leave folks behind, so be assured you will be accompanied on this trip. However, as always, you are responsible for your own safety while hiking on this, or any other, Meetup hike.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to the rather short length of this hike, we are offering an optional side hike down the Lost Gold Mine Trail. This trail is relatively flat, and parallels the south flank of the Superstitions. It is an interesting area, with some gorgeous views along the way. We will not do the entire length of the Lost Gold Mine Trail, but rather hike down it apiece, and turn around at an appropriate spot relative to the group's ability and interest.
PLEASE FURTHER NOTE: For those that want to simply enjoy the Hieroglyphics portion of the event, it will be easy to accomplish by simply returning to the lot and not taking the optional side trip down the Lost Gold Mine Trail. The point where we turn to go the extra piece is only a short distance from, and in view of, the parking area, itself. We will pass this intersection on the initial hike to the petroglyphs. So, those wanting to return to their cars can do so at that time.
Bring your sunscreen, hats, hiking shoes, cameras, snacks, plenty of water (at least 2 liters), and your sense of adventure!
CARPOOLING: For those wishing to carpool, we would suggest meeting at 9 AM at the Home Depot at Power and US 60 to complete the trek to the trailhead. From there, by no later than 9:15 AM, proceed to the trailhead. To get to the carpool spot, go east on the Superstition Freeway (US 60) to Superstition Springs Blvd. exit 187. Take that exit, turn right and go 1/2 mile east, across Power Road. Then turn left, toward Home Depot, at the second driveway. Park in the southwest corner of the lot, behind Burger King. The Home Depot address is 6838 E Superstition Springs Blvd., Mesa, AZ 85208.
Directions to the trailhead:
From Phoenix, travel east on Route 60 east of Apache Junction to Kings Ranch Road. Take a left on Kings Ranch Road for about 2.5 miles to Baseline Road. At Baseline Road, take a right. Go .3 miles and turn left. (You'll see a sign directing you to the trailhead.) Go .4 mile to Valley View and turn left again. (You'll see another sign directing you to the trailhead.) Valley View will turn into N. Whitetail. Go .5 mile to a "T" and then turn right onto East Cloudview. Proceed for another .3 mile to the parking lot. From Kings Ranch Road to the trailhead, allow yourself 10 minutes driving time.
There are no drinking fountains or restrooms (only a port-a-potty) at the trailhead, so please plan accordingly.
This hike shall be in conjunction with the Hiking in Superstition Mountain Meetup Group.
Yes, dog friendly, Khanh! Great, look forward to spending the day AND evening with you!
I plan to be at the meeting location if all goes well tonight sleep-wise. I've really missed hiking so hoping the stars line up this time :)
Sorry, gang, our new camera memory card failed, and some of the pix didn't come out very well. We posted the best of the bunch. Hopefully, you have some others you can add!
As Always Thanks To the whole group for a great hike, and to Dave and Letlet for getting us all together on a new trail! If we could just get Letlet to pick up the pace a little more.... Ha!
