Thunderbird park loop - Winter location

  • This location is shown only to members

New parking area and new hike for our T-bird hike. Park Rangers are enforcing the night curfew at the main parking area. The winter hike leaves from the swanky Arrowhead Lakes subdivision (Brentwood in the desert ;D) and takes the H-1 trail west, hooks up with the H-3 trail and climbs to the top of the Eastern most of the hedgepeth hills (none of which have names). This is a nice change from our regular route on little traveled trail that passes a small bird viewing pond which gets a lot of avian visitors. The H-3 is a lot smoother after improvements last year.

Meet time: 6:00

Distance: 3 miles

Elevation Gain: 520'

Terrain: Well maintained hiking trail

Rating: Moderate

Duration: 1.5 hours

Equipment: Your sturdy hiking shoes and at least some water. Also, a headlight or other light source.

City Parks Map

Direction: From either direction on loop 101, go north on 59th avenue, toward the hills. Go .8 miles to Arrowhead lakes drive. Go right, .9 miles to Melinda. The parking is on the cul de sac across Melinda. I used Mapquest's point and shoot geographic tool for the address above, so it should get you right to it.

I am going in today and changing these to the new winter location after this hike. I can't be there so everybody be advised that the Rangers may glare at you as you leave the park. Hopefully no worse than that.

I thought that the Park Rangers wanted everyone off the trails by sunset (or maybe dusk ~ half an hour later) in this park. Sunset is about 6:30pm. ???

Will try hard to get there, but, will crash the party as I cannot be sure that work will allow.
