Tom's Thumb Even Looooongerrrrr Way

Adding up the miles in preparation for the Seven Summits!  We'll start at Gateway, take the loop to Bell Pass, go up and over the summit, follow Windgate to East End, go up and over to Tom's Thumb trailhead, and then back up to the Thumb, then make our way down the switchbacks back to Gateway.

Length: 15-16 miles?  Basically the 12 miles we did last time, plus down and up to Tom's Thumb Trailhead

Difficulty: you betcha!  This is a long, hard hike, very steep in most parts, especially that killer East End, which is rated very difficult

Elevation Gain: well Bell Pass give us 1202 feet and the East End = 1041 feet, and we are up and down and around.  So in summary: lots.

Time: 7-8 hours

Warning:  NOT for beginners in any way!  You want to be experienced, strong and fit for this one. Plus with this kind of distance, you may find yourself alone in parts as we inevitably spread out.  Remember, you are responsible for your own safety.

Bring lots of water - probably 3-5 liters, and snacks

This is a great way to train for Seven Summit Challenge.  If we have energy, we'll adjourn to Tom's Thumb market for lunch and BEER afterwards.

Plus, I'll collect $1 voluntary donation to HHH

This sounds FABULOUS ..... assuming I get a spot, is anyone coming from the west side who might want to carpool?

Hi Martin. I'd love a ride and am happy to chip in for gas. Want to meet at 6:30 near 101 & 59thave? Can I suggest the Starbucks there? The beasts -aka dogs- can't do a hike this long.

Sorry after today I feel that I can't do this hike sorry for the late notice.

Sorry for the late notice, but I got scared of your hike on the hike I did today. Although I feel great after today, I just think I would slow you guys down and don't want to interfear with your getting ready for your big hike. So have a great time and hope to be able to particapate in another long hike at a later date. Once again sorry for the late notice.

Sorry guys to change my RSVP. Did Casner Canyon up in Sedona yesterday. It was a bit more than expected - sore knees & tired legs.

Harald! You know it's not the same without you. But I bet you saw beautiful scenery in Sedona, eh

I think Harald is trying to get out of his his big hike along the Andes to Tierra del Fuego.

Scottsdale is promising blue skies and gorgeous 84 degrees. Yahoo! Bring plenty of water - more than you think. And a hat. By the time we are on the way down, we'll be in full on direct hot sun.

I would have had us start in Tucson, but there's simply not enough elevation gain

I would LOVE to do this w you all!!! I was an avid hiker in Hawai'i where we recently moved from. I haven't hiked since March as our son was just born 10 weeks ago...would it be ok if I came and if needed, bailed at Tom's Thumb trailhead since I live right there? Or would you prefer I wait until I'm "back in the game" a little more?

    October 23, 2013

    • brenda

Hi Julie, come on out! You'll have lots of options - turn back from Bell Pass, turn back at Windgate, etc. Just note that we are starting at Gateway Trailhead, so if you bail at Tom's Thumb, you'll need a lift. Congratulations on the birth of your son!

      October 23, 2013

  • Sobha Y.

Yay!!! You are doing it again !!
