Winter Cabin Trail #70

Winter Cabin Trail #70  Saturday November 16, 2014 Carpool 7am Hike 10am

Moderate-Difficult 12 miles RT  2,341 elevation gain

Winter Cabin Trail descends through Ponderosa Pine, Gambel Oak and Junipers for 1.5 miles to the historic Winter Cabin & Spring, located about 30ft downstream behind the cabin. You can connect with other trails here, but we are going to continue on the Winter Cabin Trail #70 to Ott Lake Trail #70B. Follow this for a short 0.21 miles to Ott Lake. Then we'll go back to the Winter Cabin Trail and continue 5 miles through Sycamore Canyon (Arizona's second largest canyon) to Sycamore Creek. There is no water here & this will be our turnaround point. Optional lunch afterwards at the West Side Deli 2370 W. Hwy 89A #6 (located in the Safeway Shopping Center) Sedona. [masked]

HIGH CLEARANCE VEHICLES MANDATORY! IF YOU DO NOT OWN A HCV YOU WILL NOT BE GUARANTEED A SPOT ON THIS ADVENTURE. GROUP SIZE WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE NUMBER OF HCVS AVAILABLE!

Carpool: 7am Bagel Gourmet 16845 N. 29th Ave #4 at the West end of the Fry's Shopping Center at I-17/Bell Rd.

Directions: Take I-17 North to exit 298 Sedona/179. Proceed into Sedona. From the "Y" Roundabout in Sedona, go Right on 89A up Oak Creek Canyon. Just past MP291, go Left on FR535. We will wait for all vehicles here so no one gets lost. After 2.6 miles, bear Left to continue on FR 535. After 4.1 miles, bear Left on FR536. Follow 3.25 miles and bear Right on FR538. Follow about 5.5 miles to FR538G on the Right. There is a big sign there. It is another 2 miles down this rough road to the trailhead.

Bring: 3-4 liters water, snacks, warm gloves, hat, first aid kit, headlamp or flashlight (you should have these items in your pack at all times!), camera & $1 voluntary donation to the 3H fund.

It was a little warmer for the rest of us who wore pants, LOL!

NOTE: The posted directions above are NOT correct. FR535 is just past MP 391, not 291, off the 89A. Take the FR535 to FR536, then the 538 all the way past Turkey Butte Lookout to the signed FR538H & Winter Cabin Trailhead. Meetup does not allow me to go back and edit info once the hike has occurred.

I appreciated this smaller group sticking together on this wintry adventure to the Cabin and "Nott" Lake! Thanks to our drivers for 4-wheeling through the mud and over rocks to get us there!

Was a nice fresh temputer for hiking :0). The drive in was pretty, just finding the trail head was an adventure itself. Many of us met for something to eat afterwords. All I am going to say is don't leave your BLT unattended.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
