Rogers Trough to the ruins with optional car camp at the trailhead

Hi kids we are heading to the Rogers Trough area to visit some ruins.. These are pretty well preserved and will be located at the turn around point of the hike.. This hike is approximately 10 miles round trip.. I would give this a dual rating of a 4+ (out of 5) if you are a Tempe Lake type hiker and a 1.5 to 2 if you are an experienced off road type hiker.. There will be some rock scrambling and climbing up to the ruins.. The "bad" is that you descend down to the ruins so that means that you must ascend on the way out,, the "good" is that you will  follow the creek to the ruins with all the beauty that goes with this area.. We intend on car camping saturday night at the trailhead.. This will allow us to bring tents, coolers, lawn chairs, fire-wood, etc......If the sky is clear there should be a million stars........  I would think that any pickup and probably most any SUV would have no problem driving to the TH.. I will try to get out there before but there are no guarantees.. If you agree to this mission be prepared, bring sunscreen, hat, broke in shoes, food, water, etc...........

This is a dog friendly hike and well behaved dogs are always welcome however if your dog growls, bites, lunges at other dogs and or people I must ask that you leave you puppy home out of respect for your fellow hiker,, this is not a training class...........

The carpool location will be the Home Depot at Hwy. 60 and Power Rd. right behind the Burger King, we will leave promply at 8:00 A.M. and we should arrive at the TH around 9:30-- 10:00..

Hey guys are you allowed to camp on top by the ruins ?

    November 17, 2013

    • joe s.

Uh no, you could camp down by the creek but the general rule is to not camp in any ruins.. One should always strive for a minimal impact on these ancient places..............

To Tim and everyone else that is going to return to Phoenix after the hike, you should plan on a full day to drive out spend a reasonable time on the hike and your return to town.. I would doubt that you would be home before 5pm................

Hi Diane, good to hear from you.. If your vehicle is at least ALL-WHEEL DRIVE it should make it however a full 4-wheel drive (jeep, older 4-runner etc.) would be best..

For those of us who aren't camping overnight, how long is this hike going to be? I'm trying to get an ETA of when those of us who aren't camping might get back to Phoenix by.

Wait, are we arranging carpooling now or when we get to the Burger King? Everyone who is commenting on this thread is asking for rides? I guess that's what we're doing now. Does anyone have room for me? I have a volvo sedan, and I'm not sure that my car can handle the clearance. Who all is driving?

    November 14, 2013

    • joe s.

Well you can work on carpool arrangements when ever you want however in many cases the person you think you will be riding with may not show so you will be back to carpooling at Burger King..........................

Do you have any idea where we stand on available vehicles. I have a Wrangler with the back seat removed now so I could only take one. If you think I'll need to take 2 or 3 I'll put it back in.

    November 12, 2013

    • Deborah W.

      I know I will need a ride

    November 10, 2013

    Hi Chris and Joe,
I need a break from hands and feet scrambling after yesterday. lol.
Have a good camping next Saturday! I will see you soon on other trails.

just realized that I am hiking Windgate on Sunday the 17th so no camp for me. But some of the others that want a ride in and out to trailhead can ride that aren't camping not bringing the dogs either.

    November 6, 2013

    • Christina

Hi Martin, I live close to 23 Ave and Southern. Is it convenient to ride with you from that corner to the carpool location? Will share gas cost. Thanks.

      November 7, 2013

    • Martin O.

No problem. I am not staying after the hike and camping because i signed up for a hike Sunday morning. I will be driving the whole way no carpool but will meet up with others at carpool location. Your welcome to ride to and from the hike with us (my wife) and I if your not planning on camping. Give me an exact address and I'll get back to you with the time I will be there to pick you up. I like to arrive at least 15 to 30 mins early.

      November 8, 2013

  • Martin O.

I have 4 wheel and would love to go. I am going to sign up for myself and my wife, but she may have to work(amazon) the peak season. Is it a hard climb for the dogs do they have to be carried up an incline rock face or can dogs handle it? Awaiting your answer Thanks

    November 6, 2013

    • joe s.

The final climb to the ruins is about 60 feet, dogs can climb to a nice room to wait 40 feet up but will not be able to go the last 20 feet. My dog Charlie (a Lab) has no problem on this hike.. Be sure and bring water as it has been dry lately and the creek may have little or no water for your dog......................

      November 7, 2013

  • Eduardo

    Will met at the carpool

    November 6, 2013

  • joe s.

Kids if you walk Fluffy the poodle around Tempe lake twice a week and you are spent for days, this is not your hike.. However if you have done several Superstition Mountains hikes you should have no trouble.. The terrain is similar.............

    November 6, 2013

  • Christina

meet at carpool and no camping for me.
Anyone coming from South Phoenix Area?

    November 6, 2013

  • Bill b.

How hard is the scrambling? what is the elev. gain

    November 6, 2013

    • joe s.

There is rocks and such all the way but the final 50 feet is hands and feet scrambling. The elevation gain is "hell - if - I - Know".. You will be going up hill pretty much all the way back so I would say "a bunch"

      November 6, 2013

  • joe s.

Unless it rains should be dry feet

    November 6, 2013

  • joe s.

Hi Robert, straight down the creek and back........

    November 6, 2013

  • Lance W.

I don't have a vehicle that can make it to the trailhead and am not planning to camp, so I would need to ride with someone who is not staying overnight.

    November 6, 2013

  • Robert

Hi Joe, What route are you taking to the ruins?

    November 6, 2013

  • joe s.

Hi Jory, carpooling will be arranged at Burger King Saturday morning or here ahead of time between participants...............

    November 6, 2013

  • Diane M.

Hi Joe! Long time no see! I plan to camp. I have a Nissan Rogue which I believe can get me to the TH. Let me know if you think different. You mentioned following the creek. Does this mean we will be hiking in the water (need to plan for wet feet) or on the river bank?
