Bill Williams Mountain

BILL WILLIAMS MOUNTAIN   Saturday May 3, 2014

Carpool 7am, Hike 10:25am

Moderate-Difficult   8 miles RT 2,474 ft elevation gain

Constructed as a horse trail in 1902 to service the fire tower on the summit, this higher elevation trail wastes no time on switchbacks, plowing straight up in abrupt, heart-pumping style. Most of the trail is canyon-bound and thick with ponderosa, aspen, vines and flowering shrubs. Views are sparse until the trail emerges on a ridgeline below the summit where fir trees and aspens embellish breathtaking vistas! Optional lunch afterwards at South Rims Wine & Beer Garage 514 E. Rt 66 Williams, AZ 86046  [masked]

Carpool: 7am departure Bagel Gourmet 16845 N. 29th Ave #4 located at the West end of the Frys Shopping Center at I-17/Bell Rd.

Directions: Take I-17 North to Flagstaff, go left (West) on I-40 30 miles to exit 161. Go left (South) on Railroad Ave, then left on Clover Hill, following signs to Williams District Ranger Station and the trailhead.

Bring: 3-4 liters water, snacks, hat, camera.

Post hike notes: The directions above are incorrect. From exit 161 off the I-40, go left over the freeway and take an immediate Right on the frontage road, following trailhead signs. On the trail, when you come to the dirt road, go ACROSS the road and pick up the trail on the other side. When you hit the dirt road again, hike UP the road to the fire lookout.
