Wilderness of Rocks Loop, Mount Lemmon, Catalina Mountains

  • Aug 18, 2012 · 9:00 AM

As one author says "... the Wilderness of Rocks is the most scenic spot in the Catalinas"

We all enjoy the splendor of the Catalina Mountains and this will surely be one of the best adventures of the summer. We will be using 3 trails to complete our loop. Starting from the summit of Mount Lemmon we will follow the Mount Lemmon trail to the Lemmon Rock Lookout trail and then to the Wilderness of Rocks trail back to the Mount Lemmon trail and back to our start point.

Of course Summerhaven and The Cookie Cabin are still there for our enjoyment after the hike.

This hike is 8.6 miles and will gain 1800 feet in elevation as we will go down before coming back up to end our hike. In other words, the end of the hike will be all uphill!!

This is rated moderate to difficult so please evaluate your ability. After 7 miles of hiking the last mile will be difficult climbing back up the hill!

Directions to the trailhead: I10 south to exit 248, Ina Road. Turn left on Ina Rd. Follow Ina Road as it becomes E. Skyline Dr. Continue on E. Skyline Dr. to E. Sunrise Dr. (continuing straight you will be on E. Sunrise Dr.). Follow E. Sunrise Dr. to N. Kolb Rd. and turn right. N. Kolb Rd. becomes N. Sabino Canyon Rd. Follow N. Sabino Canyon Rd. to E. Tanque Verde Rd. and turn left. Follow E. Tanque Verde Rd. to E. Catalina Highway and turn left. Follow E. Catalina Highway for approximately 30 miles and turn right on Ski Run Rd. at the sign for Ski Valley. Drive past Mt. Lemon Ski Valley and continue to the dirt parking lot next to the electrical substation. High clearance vehicles are not needed for the last leg of this road but if those that own them would volunteer to drive we won't have to worry.

Car pool location: Behind the Mimi's Restaurant and in front of Barnes and Noble in the shopping center at the southwest corner of I10 and Ray Rd. Please meet there and be ready to leave at 6:00 sharp! Any additional car pool spots should be arranged privately or through the comments section of this event. Remember to compensate your drivers! Also for those not wishing to visit Summerhaven after the hike please arrange to car pool with like minded people.

Please remember water, snacks, hats, proper footwear, sunscreen, cameras and as always please bring plenty of water!

This was a great GC training hike. I learned that I really didn't care, if it poured rain while I was carrying a backpack and my shoes are not good for backpacking! Thanks for organizing this hike Gary and happy birthday!!!

Sure Dee, sounds great! Do you guys want me to drive? I can drive either the VW (which might be a tad tight, with five people) or the F150, which will hold five people easily. E-mail me with where you want to meet. Thanks!
