Carpool is at 6:30AM. Meet at trailhead at 8:30 We will be leaving promptly. Don't forget to help out your drivers with gas money.
I was looking for something new at a higher (cooler temps) elevation and found this hike along an old jeep road.
This hike follows the 4 wheel drive route of Forest Road 503A, which is a remnant of the 1883 wagon road that linked Jerome with Prescott. The route contours along the eastern slopes of Woodchute Mountain and features fine views of the entire Verde Valley area.
If you follow this link to the site on Hike Az and read down we will be doing Option 2 The Round trip. http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=16262
Distance 9.1 miles
Elevation 900ft + or -
Difficulty- moderate to difficult due to length
We will start at the south end of FR 503A at Mescal Gulch on Highway 89A and hike to the hilltop just east of the 6277' saddle, returning the same way.
A few things to remember:
Bring plenty of water 3-4l for a hike this length
Know your ability while not a difficult hike Jeep roads tend to be rocky and a little more strenous.
We will stop at the turn around point for a break, so bring something to nosh on.
If you would like to have lunch we will be stopping at the Texas Roadhouse Rest on Rt 69 in Prescott. I will have directions.
Directions to the trailhead:
Take the rt 69 Prescott exit off of rt 17. go 25.5 mikes to Fain Rd From the junction of U.S. Highway 89 and U.S. Highway 89A just north of Prescott, drive east on U.S. Highway 89A toward Jerome for approximately 15.5 miles. Turn left onto Forest Road 503A (dirt) at milepost 339.15. There is room to turn around and park just a few hundred feet up FR 503A
