Inner Basin

Sunday Oct 21, 2012

Carpool 7am, Hike 9:45am

Moderate 7.8 miles RT Elevation Gain 1,900ft

This lovely Fall Colors trail starts at Lockett Meadow (just recently opened by the Forest Service after the Schultz Fire closed it over two years ago) and takes you into the San Francisco Peak's Inner Basin. From Right to Left you have Rees Peak (11,474ft), Aubineau Peak (11,878), Agassiz Peak (12,356), Fremont Peak (11,969) and Doyle Peak (11,460). The hike in is a steady climb through aspen, fir and pine forests and ends at the Weatherford Trail. In past years you could make a loop out of it by taking the Weatherford Trail to the Waterline Trail. However this will be an out and back trek because the Waterline Trail is still closed.

DUE TO THE HIGH ELEVATION (8,600 to 11,000ft) AND TIME OF YEAR, INCLEMENT WEATHER CAN OCCUR. PLEASE BE PREPARED FOR RAPID AND UNPREDICTABLE WEATHER CHANGES, SUCH AS RAIN OR SNOW. Optional lunch afterwards at Charly's Pub & Grill inside the Weatherford Hotel 23 N. LeRoux Street Flagstaff 86001 928.779.1919.

Carpool: 7am Bagel Gourmet 16845 N. 29th Ave #4 Phx 85053 in the West end of the Fry's Shopping Center

Directions to Trailhead: Take I-17 to Flagstaff, merge onto I-40 East toward Albuquerque. Take exit 201 (Country Club Dr) and turn Left toward US 89 N/Page. Turn Right on 89 for 12 miles to FR 420 directly across from the Sunset Crater turnoff. Turn Left (west) on FR 420 for about a half mile, turn Right (north) on FR 552. Follow about 5 miles and turn Right at the Lockett Meadow sign, continuing to the trailhead.

Bring: 3-4 liters water, high energy snacks, hat, sunscreen, camera, rain gear, jacket and gloves.

Good steady incline, good workout. Too bad that all the Aspen leaves were off the trees. It would have been a wonderful site! (next year) :)

Last week's snow dropped all the leaves but it was still a beautiful trek! Special thanks to STAN for shuttling us to the trailhead in his four-wheel drive!

Another fun filled day with a great group of people. We may have misplaced the fall color but we managed to find some winter instead. Glad to see a bunch of new faces joining us today. Thanks as always Shannon!
