    She writes:

I’d like to go to Battleship Mountain. I’ve not yet led this so I’m going to need the cooperation and patience of everyone as I try to lead this hike. I will be as prepared as I can be obviously.

This is NOT a beginners’ hike. At the same time, this will not be a ‘fitness’ hike although I’ll go along at a comfortable 2.5 mph pretty steadily. We may not have a ‘sweep’ which is a person who stays last on the trail to make sure everyone is on trail. If someone wants to volunteer to do that for us, perfect. But if not, then we will all need to keep pace with each other. No dogs on this hike due to the length and steepness of portions of the trail.

There are STEEP drop-offs on this hike. Please assess your comfort with heights and rock scrambling accordingly. Read more about the trail here:
    http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=229

We’ll stop at the top of Battleship for lunch and to marvel at the views.

    Length: about 12 miles

    Elevation gain: about 2400 feet

Time to Allow: over an hour to get to the trailhead from Phoenix plus carpooling, 5 or so hours for hiking/eating lunch, over an hour to come home

Hike trailhead: Superstition Wilderness. From Phoenix, take U.S. 60 east to Exit 196. Go north on Idaho Road for 2.3 miles, then turn northeast on the Apache Trail (Arizona 88) and proceed about 15 miles to the Canyon Lake Marina, between mile markers 210 and 211. The southern side of the parking lot is designated for hikers. The trailhead is on the other side of the highway, just east of the bridge.

Carpool: Please carpool to help decrease emissions and fossil fuel use. If you live east of this carpool location, just let us know and someone can pick you along the highway. I myself live close to central Phoenix so let me know if you’re coming that way too.

Carpool location: Tempe AMF Lanes, 4407 South Rural Road Tempe, AZ 85282. Please meet there and be ready to leave at 7:00 sharp

Mike, sorry, I cancelled it. I thought it would let me do a message and I couldn't find it online until just now that you posted. Sorry. It's not happening.

ok, maybe we can carpool. what do you drive? If it's not a gas-guzzling car, I'll ride with you. otherwise, I'll drive my good gas mileage little beater. no offense meant ... i'm trying to be greener and more independent of oil and all the political mess that goes with it. maybe you can ride with me if I will save more.

If you want to start another hike, I'd rather you go through Gary and post it separately. Someone (whomever) can just ask Gary and he will post it for you. Thanks!

Everyone, Clyde was nice enough to look up the elevation gain and exact mileage of this route. Also, he gave me the correct link to the route from Canyon Lake trailhead. Everything is now updated. Plus, we have some people who have hiked this before so we won't get lost! Yeah! Thanks Clyde and everyone else who helps to make these hikes fun and safe.
