Base of Weaver’s Needle

Happy Holidays everyone! Please join me in my annual Dec 25th traditional hike. This year, I’d like to go to the base of Weaver’s Needle. I’ve only been there twice before and we did lose the exact trail but we got to the base nonetheless. So, know that I’ll do my best to find the trail but we might bushwhack a little to get up or down the base and find THE trail.

This is NOT a beginners’ hike. At the same time, this will not be a ‘fitness’ hike although I’ll go along at a comfortable 2.5 mph pretty steadily. We may not have a ‘sweep’ which is a person who stays last on the trail to make sure everyone is on trail. If someone wants to volunteer to do that for us, perfect. But if not, then we will all need to keep pace with each other. No dogs on this hike due to the length and steepness of portions of the trail.

We’ll stop at the base of the needle for lunch and to marvel at the views.

Length: about 8.5 miles

Elevation gain: about 3300 feet

Time to Allow: over an hour to get to the trailhead from Phoenix plus carpooling, 4-5 hours for hiking/eating lunch, over an hour to come home.

Hike trailhead: Peralta Trail, 7.6 miles east of the junction Idaho Rd / US-60. Turn Left on to FS77 which is Peralta Road. Follow FS77 5.6 miles to a left and up turnoff. Continue 1.9 miles to Peralta Trailhead.

Carpool: Please carpool to help decrease emissions and fossil fuel use. If you live east of this carpool location, just let us know and someone can pick you along the highway. I myself live close to central Phoenix so let me know if you’re coming that way too.

Carpool location: Tempe AMF Lanes, 4407 South Rural Road Tempe, AZ 85282 Please meet at 8:30

Tom, David, Letlet, I hope you don't mind but I'll be relying on you to help guide. I'm using this description as the pathway. http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=245

Don't mind helping at all. We know the Weaver's Needle Cross Cut Loop. Scenic, beautiful, no bushwacking or route finding, and cuts right near Weaver's. This route leaves out only the 270 degree portion around the base, as the triplogs and comments we've heard always direct us away from such an endeavor. Still, happy to add that piece in if someone else is more familiar. If someone could print out the description, we're sure this formidable group could work it out. Otherwise, there is some beautiful terrain, rock formations, passageways, and views to share utilizing the cross cut portion of the trail.

ok, we can do that hike. I don't have a printer so I'd rather keep it simple and do this and not get lost.

Unfortunately, I have to cancel. I fell while hiking 2 weeks ago and my knee isn't healed enough to hike. I'm very disappointed!

    Patricia,

I plan on meeting at the Peralta trailhead at around 9:15 as it doesn't appear an east valley carpool is forming.

I also live in Mesa. We could meet at the Home Depot parking lot by the 60 and Superstition Springs (oh, or is that 60 and Southern?) off Power Rd.
