Gosh, it's been 20+ years, but I've hiked the Highline trail on the Mogollon rim, and after several attempts, I made it to the top of Mt. Humphries. I've done West Fork and I have hiked at least 75 miles inside the Grand Canyon (I lived in Flagstaff for almost 20 years). Locally, years ago (in my teens and twenties) I hiked around Continental Mountain to Seven Springs starting in what is now the Spur Cross conservation area. I've also hiked around Go John Mountain, Squaw Peak and Camelback Mountain. Recently the little Spur Cross area trails are about all the hiking I have done. I haven't done much if any hiking in the last 10+ years. As I look back, my other outings have been on horseback, road bikes, mountain bikes or cross country skiis. Gosh, I used to be in good shape...this is getting depressing just thinking about all of this...
For views, I think I'd have to pick the Kaibab trail to Cedar Ridge.
Developing stronger legs and stronger lungs and heart. Yes, I will be slow at first and on out-and-back trails, won't be able to go as far as everyone else. But I will go as far as I can and over time, I'll get stronger and faster. It took several tries, but I eventually made it to the top of Humphries in the 80's. Also, I want to get started moving before it gets too hot - being overweight in the heat really sucks.
Just about anything that isn't straight up or really tricky getting back down.
at some point, sure! But right now, I am just getting used to this Meetup thing and getting out. Since I live in Cave Creek, I can help with Meet & Greet (whatever that is) for hikes up here.
It's been a long time since I hiked around here, but I'm looking forward to getting back into the great outdoors. Right now I may be a "plodder", but I'll only get stronger and fitter!!
This was my first Meetup EVER, and it was a great success for me. I knew I wouldn't be able to hike as fast as the others, but that wasn't as important as just meeting other folks and GETTING OUT THERE. I hiked further and faster than I would had I been alone. The group was friendly and very welcoming, I look forward to meeting them again in future hikes. Al did a great job filling in for Daniel as leader. Thank you so much!
