SketchUp for Beginners

Sketchup has immense potential for design work

If you come for this introductory meeting, you will be inspired to design anything, including your Tiny House. Everyone who attends this meeting will leave knowing 9 basic drawing tools. These tools will be all you need to design your tiny house:

Template choice – Preferences on menu: feet and inches

Axis (red is first dimension, green is second dimension)

Draw: lines, type in measurements, Push/Pull tool

Zoom, Pan, Orbit

Measure: must follow axis, delete grid lines

Group: demonstrate how wacky it can become without Group

Component: demonstrate no group/no component vs. group vs. component

Copy: Move + Option key: “6X” , “6X/”

Rotate: 1. Choose plane 2. Center of pivot 3. Outside of arc (type in degrees of arc)

4. Final resting place (Lock a face: click, shift/hold to keep chosen plane)

Layers: how to change layers; how to create new layers

You can watch these vides at home in preparation. We will also watch them again in our meeting to be sure you know how to work with the tools.

In the end, we will ask a couple of volunteers who are beginners to demonstrate how to draw a 2 by 4 , move, and copy it.

Hope to see you there!

I'm thinking it would be good yo have
a field trip to the Sodo Makerspace.
    They have woodworking equipment /
shop (and a projector). Thinking they
would be willing to host a meetup. Also
maybe go in on a group membership
for tiny house builders if there are
enough of us needing workspace to
work on our tiny endevors... I'll try and
set something up later this week...

Just an idea. I have seen other organizers repost an event when there has been too much confusion. I had no idea this had been posted for two years.

Thank you Candace and Amy, but --
Please do not change the date or the time any more! I have to keep moving my other activities around to accommodate.

I own a small bike shop at 192 Brewing in Kenmore. We have a large warehouse space with a projector set up that could be available for free if it were on a Monday or Tuesday night, providing there is not a football game. Plus Beer!

Hi Erik, thank you for your generous offer. We will make this happen! Would Oct 4th the Saturday be available , 1pm to 4pm?

I am interested. I have been doing months worth of concepts on draft and drawing paper. I downloaded sketch up but am I having some anxiety getting anything going in it. I be done years worth of CAD and maya/3D studio Max projects in years past but am rusty. This class would be a grew foundation review and fun hands on experience. Please let me know more details.

I'vw downloaded and installed the newer version and started the tutiorial a few weeks back.. Seems pretty easy to work with after getting through the initial tutorial... Need to do a few more of the basic before comfortable enough to do any training for others.

      September 16

  • Sarah F

I'd also like to suggest that if this done perhaps we could also use a web camera and some sort of webinar site to stream/record it. Good for those who are interest but aren't in the area or can't make it.

Sounds good, Erik. Whose the facilitator?

Forrest is the manager at 192 and should be able to schedule something.

The Northwest Film Forums on Capitol Hill rents out audio, video and production equipment.
    http://www.nwfilmforum.org/live/collection/equipment/219

It's very cheap, but we would have to call to find out if the equipment is compatible with the laptop.

    or...
here's one for sale on craigslist for $100

I have projector for use with svga computers.

    November 2, 2013

  • Laura H.

I looked into it and none of the libraries have projectors, but they do have screens. Our best bet seems to be either rent one or find someone that has one. Aurora Rents has them, but it is $65/day (ouch)!. If someone has a flatscreen TV we could connect the computer with an HDMI cable and just use that. Might be kind of haul to bring a TV somewhere, but it could work!

I've been searching for a conference space with a projector. It's harder to find than one would think! The public libraries are free and located all over but the one in Northgate told me that neither they nor any other public library has a projector. The person who suggested that Montlake has a projector, might have the best idea if we can confirm that they do. The N.gate library said they have very few spaces (4) available in November (weekends and evenings). It looks like these rooms get booked up quickly, so I hope we can make the arrangements soon.

I'm looking forward to meeting other tiny house enthusiasts. I can't think of any place to meet off the top of my head, but I will say that meeting downtown would be very expensive with regards to parking and parking tickets. Does anyone have belong to a church or private school membership that might have meeting spaces with projectors?

also InkScape is a good program if you just want to do a 2d floor plan to get your designs down. it's free, and extremely easy to use. would be willing to help people get started with that until they are comfortable with the 3d stuff.

    February 7, 2013

our laptop is currently in a non-portable state but can possibly work around that. can also maybe help with 3d work since I'm a little familiar with it.

    September 25, 2012

  • Jason

I'm open to any suggestions for the most ideal location for everyone, for me it doesn't matter; I'll go anywhere in the Puget Sound region. Candice had set up the last meetup for SketchUp at the Richmond Beach Library in Shoreline. The King County Library System has computers reservations, but their condition is unknown and their use is time constrained based upon demand. The details are all open for discussion, express your thoughts, concerns, ideas, and questions.

    September 24, 2012

    • Candice

Same like you, I would go anywhere. I head down Seattle library is amazing, and is a must see kind of tourist attraction. I have never been there... Not sure about parking...

      September 24, 2012

  • Sarah

Yup, we've got laptops. Agree that any conference room with a projector would work. We're closest to the Ballard, Fremont, and Green Lake branches, but the Montlake branch would work fine.

I'm wondering how many of us are on laptops, making the need for computers moot? Any conference room with a projector would work, and I believe most branches of SPL have those, at least I know mine does (Montlake).
