Why is sustainable living important to you?

Everyone has been impacted by the economic climate of late. And we want to do more for the environment, but it's hard when you’re trying just to find rent every month. I want to find a way to make green building more affordable and I believe the way to do that is with community involvement & putting together an easy to build kit. My goal is to lower the cost of the mortgage, utilities and home ownership in three ways: Building as a community to reduce the cost of the mortgage, reducing the cost of utilities through smart building and reduce the cost of home ownership by using durable materials. In this way, we can build a financially stronger country while helping the environment as well.

How involved do you want to be?... Passive member, plan on attending events, volunteering time, and/or hope to build your own home?

I'm hoping to volunteer and build! Strong suits: I know a great deal about construction and am wonderful with designing kitchens, storage solutions and euro-style closet systems. I can also finish wood cabinets in poly, stain or milk paint. Weak Suits: Anything mechanical!

What do you hope to get out of this experience?

I'm excited about meeting everyone and having that sense of community that eluded us during the Navy years. I'm excited about the idea of helping each other and the world by building a less expensive, more sustainable life style. As individuals, the task would be far more expensive and difficult to achieve, but together I believe we can do most anything. My folks have been volunteering with Habitat for Humanity for years and I have seen how it can change lives.

What skills do you have to offer?

Very knowledgeable about both real estate and construction. Definately an ideas person who thinks outside the box. I also have experience in furniture finishing, tiling and finishing kitchen cabinets. My husband and I have done many, many projects on houses we have owned; both modern and old. I also design storage spaces such as closets, laundry and pantries to maximize space.

Introduction

I started this group in the hope of helping folks! I would like to be involved in a limited way, as my health allows. I want to thank the new organizers for stepping in to save the project and I wish them every success!

What Catherine G is saying about this Meetup Group

I couldn't be more proud! I hope we can make the co-op work and help our planet, the economy and ourselves.
