What we’re about

Welcome to TJEX! A friendly community of individuals enthusiastic about the Japanese language and culture.

What we do:
We provide a structured, organized language exchange between language learners and advanced/native speakers of English and Japanese.

Who it’s for:
Individuals wishing to practice or improve their fluency in Japanese or English. All levels of language are welcome, even complete beginners.

It’s also an excellent opportunity to meet new people, practice your English/Japanese, and have fun.

How it works:
Upon arrival you will be placed in a group of four people: one individual who is of a similar level to you, and two individuals of the opposite language.
Groups are organized in advance of the event.

Each event has two RSVP lists - one for each language. Events are generally open for RSVPs two weeks in advance, after 10:00 PM.

When:
Our language exchange is every Saturday & Wednesday evening, with optional dinner or coffee afterwards.

We also have many special events, often taking us outside of Toronto, including our annual Maple syrup sugar bush tours, Hanami, ice wine & Niagara Falls tours, St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market trip, and girls-only events.

Our policies:
- Our events are by RSVP only
- The fee per person per Meetup is $2.00.
- We do not tolerate harassment of our members

We encourage the use of all areas of the website. This is your community too, so be sure to make use of all that it has to offer, and above all have fun!

サクラが咲きそうです！ということで、そろそろハイパークに観に行きませんか？
現在記載されている開催日は暫定的なものです。開花のピークが分かり次第、日程を調整する予定です。
ハイパークの桜の木2000本は、第二次世界大戦後にトロントが再移住した日本人家族を受け入れたことへの感謝として、1959年に駐カナダ日本大使からトロント市に贈られたもので、この時期は桜の美しさを堪能できます。
私たちは、おそらく丘の上の池の近くで(*)集まると(*)思います（下の写真、マーカーと道路の間参照）。もし私たちを探したいのであれば、ブルーシートと「TJEXお花見」と書かれた看板を探してみてください。
道順です：集合場所まで一緒に行きたい方は、11時半前に(*)TTCのハイパーク駅(*)にお越しください。オーガナイザーの一人が待ち合わせ場所まで案内します。(*)11時半ちょうどにハイパーク駅を出発するので、当日のTTCの状況を必ずチェックして下さい。(TTC closure today等で検索するとでてきます。)(*)
11時半前までにハイパークステーションに到着できない場合。ハイパーク駅をハイパーク通り経由で出て、通りに出たら右折してください。ハイパークに入ったら、道なりに右へ10～15分ほど進むと、桜の木にたどり着きます。
もし見つからない場合は、丘の上（公園エリア内）に洗面所として使われている（いた）建物があるので、そこを代替の集合場所として、遅れてきた私たちを探す人たちのために使用します。
希望者は、飲食物を持参することができます。ただし、日本とは異なり、公共の公園でお酒を飲むことはできません。TJEXの協力で、みんなでシェアできるようなスナックを持参する予定です。
ベンチがほとんどないので、ブランケットやタオル、芝生用の椅子を持っていくことをお勧めします。ただし、TJEXには大きなブルーシートがあり、その上に座っていただくことになります。
気温に注意し、天候に合わせて調節できる服装でお越しください。また、一日中外にいることになりますので、日焼け止めをお持ちいただくとよいでしょう。雨天決行とさせていただきます。
なお、このイベントは、この後、ランゲージ・エクスチェンジのイベントに行かれる方の時間に間に合うように終了します。

This event is only for TJEX members who have participated in at least 3 of our language exchange events within the past 6 months. Please join the waitlist and we will verify your attendance.
The Cherry Blossoms are about to bloom! So, it's time to go see them at High Park!
The current dates listed are tentative. We will adjust the date as soon as we know the peak of blooming.
The 2,000 cherry trees in High Park were a gift to the City of Toronto from the Japanese Ambassador to Canada in 1959 as a token of appreciation for Toronto's acceptance of Japanese families who relocated there after World War II.
We will probably (*) gather (*) near the pond on the hill (see photo below, between the marker and the road). If you want to find us, look for blue sheets and a sign that says "TJEX Cherry Blossom Viewing".
Directions: if you want to come with us to the meeting place, please be at the (*) High Park station (*) of the TTC before 11:30 am. One of the organizers will take you to the meeting point. Please be sure to check the status of the TTC on the day of the event, as we will leave the High Park station at exactly (*)11:30 am. (You can search for TTC closure today, etc.)(*)
If you cannot arrive at High Park Station by 11:30 am. Exit High Park Station via High Park Avenue and turn right when you reach the street. Once in High Park, follow the street to the right for 10-15 minutes until you reach the cherry tree.
If you can't find it, there is (or was) a building at the top of the hill (in the park area) that is (or was) used as a washroom, which will serve as an alternate meeting place for those of us who are late and looking for us.
Those who wish may bring their own food and drink. However, unlike in Japan, we are not allowed to drink alcohol in public parks; with the help of TJEX, we plan to bring snacks that we can all share.
Since there are few benches, we recommend bringing blankets, towels, and lawn chairs. However, TJEX will have large blue sheets for you to sit on.
Please be aware of the temperature and wear clothing that can be adjusted for the weather. You may also want to bring sunscreen, as you will be outside all day. The event will be held rain or shine.
Please note that this event will end in time for those going to the Language Exchange event later in the day.
