TORC Epic Season Ride #1 Pisgah\Bent Creek\Dupont

Ok, getting specifics on the Pisgah\Dupont\Bent Creek weekend trip:

Friday arrivals

5 hour drive, set up camp and then a short ride either at North Slope, Black Mtn. or Sycamore Cove

Saturday morning Pisgah riders…Seasonal Butter Gap with Daniel Ridge added into the ride…4-6 hours…led by Maida and accompanied by myself and others with cue sheets and gps. Here is a map for Saturday's Ride This is a tough ride for intermediate and up. The route is counter clockwise and starts and ends at the Fish Hatchery. Don't be mislead by mileage. Pisgah miles are not like regular miles. Depending on the speed of the group this ride will take 4-6 hours

Sunday morning Pisgah riders…Seasonal Black Mtn., Buckwheat, and Bennett Gap…3-5 hours…led by Maida and accompanied by myself and others with cue sheets and gps. Here is a map for Sunday's Ride This is a tough ride for intermediate and up. The route is counter clockwise and starts and ends on FS 477 near the Horse Stables. Don't be mislead by mileage. Pisgah miles are not like regular miles. Depending on the speed of the group this ride will take 3-5 hours.

If you feel like these rides will be over your skill level No worries, we will set you up with something more your speed. We are still looking for people to volunteer to lead the easier rides.

Now I need to know who does not want to ride these Pisgah seasonal trails and will only be interested in Dupont or Bent Creek? I also need to know who is willing and able to lead groups through either of these trail networks? Once I know this information Maida and I can assist by giving cue sheets, maps and possibly gpx files to any of these ride leaders. This is important to make sure that all people coming will have a good time. So please update your rsvp’s accordingly on where you want to ride and\or e-mail me so that we can get people information that they need.

Camping, there are no spots left at Davidson River for sites that can be reserved. The rest are first come first serve. Black Forest campground is close to Dupont and 30 minutes from the seasonal trail heads…seems to be the best secondary campsite. I would suggest that people start communicating site reservations at Black Forest and sharing sites. Ask Maida or me for information about the campsite if you need to.

This was set-up as an All Skills event. I would like to see everybody setup and willing to participate.

All skills event! Beginner up to Advanced are welcome to attend and will have ride options available. The more people attend the better we will be able to organize groups and ride leaders.

Rides: (explicit ride details will be added to the event once we start seeing the numbers of people rsvp and
adding their comments)

Pisgah intermediate+\advanced:

Seasonal trails: http://www.pisgaharea...

Dupont (includes beginner gravel roads and trails)

http://www.pisgaharea...

Bent Creek (includes beginner and low end intermediate trails)

Camping The FIRST option for camping is at Davidson River Campground. Davidson River is very very popular. It is almost certian to be booked by the date of the trip. If you plan on camping reserve a space NOW! The sites are good sized and can accomidate up to 2 large tents. So we sould try to split sites with our friends and split costs. We are trying to keep our group in the "Apple Tree Loop" sites 34-54.

Davidson River: (Preferred choice but need to make reservation quickly)
http://www.recreation...

The SECOND option for camping is white pines group camp. White pines is a primative group camp. Cost for the weekend is 100.00 If a reasonable sized group of people wanted to camp at white pines and split the cost amongst themselves then go for it!

White Pines:
http://www.recreation...

Both campgrounds have direct access to the Pisgah trails. The 2 campgrounds are seperated by about 2 miles of paved and gravel roads. You could easily ride your bike from one camp to the other.

There are 9 reservable sites remaining at Davidson River campground. If your planning on camping at Davidson you should get one soon before they are all gone!

For those of you interested in hoteling it, I've reserved a couple rooms at the Hampton Inn Brevard which is biking distance to the DR campground. I called in some favors and got a $29/night rate, but I can get only a few rooms at this rate so let me know asap if interested.

The rooms I had reserved at the Hampton for $29/night are spoken for. If you'd still like to stay there, let me know and I'll see if I can add to my block or some other discounted rate.

All the reservable sites at Davidson River are now booked! Who still needs a campsite? If it's just a few people then I'd recommend camping 30 min away at Black Forest campground. If it's 10 or more people then I recommend you all chip in and share the white pines group site. White pines is a short bike ride from Davidson River campground where the main group is staying.

White pines goes for 50.00 per night. 100.00 for the weekend. If there were 5 people it's reasonable. 10 people and it really starts to make sense. However, one word of caution! It's primitive meaning no showers.

Several of us are staying at the Hampton Inn which is riding distance to Davidson River campground. They still have rooms available for $59. Not too bad if you double-up. If you want this rate, call hotel and ask for the manager, Layton Parker and let him know you're with our group. They are mountain bike friendly with a bike wash area. Web link farther down in my other post.

Running a little behind on the camping thing. Anyone have room for another at their campsite? Shoot me a message if so. I could end up sleeping in my truck camper too if need be, I'm fine with that. Not as nice as Paul's portable campsite, but good enough. :-)

What's the difficulty/terrain for the Bent Creek ride? Are there any low-key fire-road type rides planned for Saturday that family/spouses can do?

  • Maida
    Maida

Lori & others: Bent Creek's terrain is not as technical or difficult as the other sections of pisgah. But It's still mtn biking. I would recommend the bent creek ride to any skill level. The layout of the trails at Bent Creek make it easy to bail out if you get tired. I do not have any low key fire road type rides planned. Mainly because nobody has volunteered to lead one. If you want something low key find me at the campground and I can set you up with a route.

    Another option:

My PMBAR partner and I will be doing an 8-10 hour training ride ride on Saturday. Bring a folding saw and proof of health insurance.

If anyone is having second thoughts about camping, I just found out our friend's rental cabin in Brevard is available this weekend. Think it's 3-bedroom, but not sure. It's right near Dupont. If interested, call Colleen at 828-606-0287 or email crsnyder@coldwellbanker.com. She's the owner and a mtn biker and will extended the "special mountain biker rental rate":).

Mike led a great ride today at Bent Creek! Rolling climbs with a nice combo of gravel/fireroad or fun tech/windy singletrack. Great swoopy/technical downhills as well as scenic views! Loved the rhododendron tunnel. Very glad I made the trip :)

A blast! Great people, great Pisgah mountain bike trails! Thanks to Dave Maida & Pisgah SORBA folks for superb leading and patiently helping folks on the trails, thanks to Dave Housekeeper for setting up this terrific TORC outing.
