We were going to ride before the meetup. But then the meetup came up and figured we would join the ride as well. And I'll camp out at your site. Thanks! Jason will not be camping it'll be just me. Is beer in glass allowed? Or does anyone care? Cause I'll grab some beers.

Debbie, yes, if I can't go because of my bike problem then you and Vanessa and Tonya or whoever can have the site. But I am still hoping to make it...might be able to get it fixed tomorrow, I hope.

SO is everyone in a certain loop in the campground or anything. I am going to look for availability. I also just hit a tree and broke my bars and bruised my shoulder. So I can't commit to the trip till I se how sore I am and find a new bar. SAD FACE!

    October 17, 2013

  • Owen P

I will be cruising up there Saturday morning to meet Jason ( I am one of the +3 ) and ride with you guys at Rocky Knob. Will there be a open camp spot available? I can always get a hotel as well, but I love sleeping in the cold!

    October 17, 2013

  • Debbie

    Sorry for the delay...crazy busy!
Sounds like we have a great backup plan. I think an 11am start on Saturday at MST...camping out...and depending on sunday's group, either another round of MST or we can head to Anglers. I'm assuming that Bandits Roost won't open up in time unless the State gets involved. We'll see!
We need some responses so we can update the guy at MST campground...who's in?

    October 16, 2013

    • Debbie

So the government's open...not sure about Bandit's Roost yet. Rob...I hope you're not disappointed if our original plan comes thru...several of us already have campsites at Bandit's. Still Rocky Knob Saturday and maybe OVT or Dark Mtn before dark? Warrior Creek for sure on Sunday (assuming hunting season will be back to regular schedule too, keeping WC closed on saturday). Let's cross our fingers!!! So sorry for the waffling... but it's the government's fault!!!

      October 16, 2013

    • Vanessa R.

      My fingers are crossed!

      October 16, 2013

Update, 5:30 p.m. ET: The Washington Post has obtained what it says is the 35-page bill that is expected to end the government shutdown tonight. One part that will be welcome news to furloughed federal workers: back pay.

Looks like a possible chance of our original plan...

Ok I facebooked Tony at MST. He says no problem but to make sure we all did not contact him and over book the place. So we are good to go. But if you have already contacted him let me know so I can call him back to make sure we are not double booking. What time are we planning to arrive anyway?

So there is no one there during the week. You have to email and he will get back to you. I forgot the dudes name but he is really nice. He is a mt biker and helps build the trails and basically volunteers at the camp during the weekends. So I am sure he will accommodate us if he can. Which I bet he can. I have been there 3 times. I think it is 10 a person.

    October 16, 2013

  • Debbie

Ok so...if the Government opens up this week, we have the bonus of not dealing with the Super D races at WC & Dark Mtn...they've been cancelled b/c they won't have time to prep the courses. I looked at it and if the original plan falls through it looks like it would make more sense to do Moores Springs Trail (2 hr 20 min from Raleigh), camp there, and do Angler's Ridge on the way home (1 hr 30 min from Raleigh and the same from MST). Boone & Moore's just seems like excess driving at 2.5 hrs from Boone to Moores and 2 hr 20 min from MST to Raleigh. Either choice is a little out of the way. I'm checking on availability at MST. MST looks like a loop trail...no getting lost. I can probably arrange for guides at Angler's b/c as many times as I've been, I still don't know my way around.

MST sounds fun so if we don't do it this time, we'll have to plan another trip! Again, feedback is welcome and appreciated.

    1 · October 14, 2013

    • Debbie

I've heard no word from the campground at MST. Would someone else like to try? I have limited ability to make calls during work this week.

      October 15, 2013

    • Vanessa R.

      I'll call tmrw.

      October 15, 2013

  • Debbie

Yes...don't book any hotel yet. Rocky Knob is open and we could ride that Saturday, but it's so not worth doing such a long trip w/o lining other stuff up. I will check in and see what I can find out, but most likely we won't have access to the trails at Dark Mtn/OVT/WC due to the government shut down.

I am open to see how people want to handle it. Some of us may need to apply for refunds from the campground...hopefully they're giving them!! There are other trails we can consider, such as Kitsuma near Black Mtn, Tanglewood near Statesville, Owl's Roost etc in G'boro. There is a private campground in Boone I hear. I'm really hoping the Gov gets over it and opens stuff up. Let me know what you think!

    October 13, 2013

    • David M.

Those other trails sound great Debbie, or we could spend a day at AR

    • Debbie

Wow!! I love that idea! I'll check a map and see if we can do Rocky Knob, then head over to MST. I haven't been there but it can't be too difficult to get around and I've been wanting to go. If I'm lucky, I can get someone to show us around! Thanks Rob!!

I am planning a mtn camp trip that weekend too. I want to go out farther than rocky knob. If anyone wants to do some pisgah stuff on friday, sat, sun let me know. Not sure where I am going or camping yet......

    October 14, 2013

    • Debbie

Since I can't come up til Sat morning, Pisgah/Dupont would be out for me. Also, I don't feel comfortable leading a ride at Pisgah (incl Wilson Creek).

      October 14, 2013

  • Courtney

Since I usually have back paint I am thinking (hotel). Before I book whatever is close, I was wondering if anyone has heard anything regarding the trail status for WWC? The camping part def sound fun, just not sure if I could ride in comfort the next day!

    October 13, 2013

  • Debbie

Currently the Wilkesboro trail system is closed due to the government shutdown. :-(. Bandit's Roost is to close by Thursday. I hope that all is resolved before this scheduled ride. I will keep you informed, even though I'm sure you all keep up with the news somewhat.

I've never been to these trails, so I am interested, however my Saturday is booked with an 8K run in Raleigh that afternoon, so a Sunday day trip would work for me. BTW.... anybody thinking about hitting Anglers Ridge for a day trip? I've never been their either, the reviews are all positive.

I'd be up for an AR ride.

      September 27, 2013

Stay tuned for logistical changes and I am open to suggestions. We have to work around:
    1. Warrior Creek closed on 19th to bow hunting.
    2. Super D race oct 19th at Dark Mtn
    3. Super D race oct 20th at WC Headwaters section.
I'm not sure of race times yet.
Sorry you guys...it's hard to find this stuff sometimes.
I booked a campsite at Bandits Roost for the 19th, A loop.

    September 12, 2013

That sounds good. No WC then? Or do WC after Dark Mtn?

I've reserved A-7 campsite for the 19th at Bandits Roost for myself and a few friends that are joining me.

It's best in the fall to make reservations.
    http://www.recreation.gov/camping/Bandits_Roost/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=73074&isDayUse=Y&topTabIndex=Search
It's tent camping or RV w/electric.  Bath houses are good.  It's on the lake so bring your SUP & wetsuit if you want.  Max of 2 vehicles & 6 people.  check in 4pm sat, check out 3pm Sunday.  $18.
Feel free to reserve Friday too and make it a full weekend!
