TORC Raleigh Greenway Loop

TORC Raleigh Greenway Loop

At Rally Point a few week ago after our Friday Umstead ride it was suggested that we have a ride to check out the local greenways so here it is.  This ride will be a loop around Raleigh and will include parts of the Crabtree Creek, Walnut Creek, Rocky Branch, and House Creek Greenways.

Ride leader: Anthony

Directions:  Meet at the dirt parking lot next to the McDonalds beside Crabtree Mall.

Time: 10:00am. (Ride by 10:15am.)

Distance: ~23 miles. Planned Route

Type of ride: All skills, no drop ride but you should be in good enough shape that you're comfortable riding this distance at a decent pace without needing several long breaks. We'll stop to regroup and rest from time to time but I don't want this to turn into a 4 hour ride.

Speed: A pace that won't be punishing for those on a mountain bikes so probably an average in the 11-14mph range.

Details: The course is almost all paved.  A short section of Crabtree Creek is dirt but can be bypassed.  Without looking it up I would say 75-80% of the route is greenway.  In a few spots we'll need to ride low traffic, low speed limit neighborhood side streets to link the greenway sections.

From the parking lot we'll head west along Crabtree Creek GW until it ends near Wake Med.  From there we'll head south through a neighborhood to the Walnut Creek GW.  This will be the only significant time spent off the GW.  Walnut Creek will take us to Rocky Branch which runs through NC State.  From there we'll head to House Creek that will take us by Meredith College and back to the mall.

You must wear a helmet while riding on the trails. Make sure you have plenty of water.

Great ride for a TORC first-timer, great to meet some great folks, and looking forward to more.

Great ride today with a strong group of riders. I wasn't sure how this ride would turn out but I really enjoyed it. Thanks everyone for coming out.

Good times. Nice to mix it up and there were several nice climbs on that route. May come in handy during the winter when the weather gets bad to get a ride in.

I've gotten a few offline messages about this ride so I thought I should share my answers here to clarify some things. I see this as a ride for those who ride regularly and/or are in good shape. If you don't ride regularly and haven't ridden this distance before this probably isn't a good ride for you to join. There is a fair amount of climbing and most of the second half of the ride is up hill. You can see this in the elevation profile at the bottom of the planned route link. On something other than a road bike this can be a pretty tough workout.

Since I may be the only one in the group who knows the way there won't be any splitting up into groups based on rider ability, speed, etc. No drop but we'll need to be able to maintain good speed and stay relatively close as one group otherwise there will be a lot of stopping leading to a really long ride that won't be fun for anyone.

Others things to also consider: Bring plenty of water and maybe a snack or two. Make sure your bike is in good working order beforehand and bring a spare tube in case of a flat. I can't ask the entire group to walk back if someone has a bike issue that can't be fixed so have some sort of plan (cab $, friend, etc) in place for that or be prepared to wait a while for one of us to come get you after the ride.

Anthony, I've done this route several times...it's been a while, but I think I remember it taking 2.5 to 3 hours? What's your normal time? I just want to make sure people know what they are getting into. :-). Thanks for posting this!! I can't make it b/c we have 2 first time beginner rides that day. :(

My first thought was to sign up too then I realized the date looked familiar.

Anthony, from the Bent Creek trail head, this exact route took me 3 hours and a few minutes last Saturday. Knock 9.6 miles off, and extrapolate time. I'm going to be riding down from Bent Creek to meet you guys. Oh, I had two people go down last Saturday. One of those deceiving slick spots in the shade over by Wake Med. Can probably knock off 15 minutes for that too.

This is a great idea. Let me see if I can get a pass from the wife

I'm not a fan of car dodging so I usually hit the Raleigh greenways when I want to ride and the trails are closed or I don't have time to get to them. I'm usually solo so if I had know people would be interested in this sort of thing I would have posted some before now.
