The Follow Steve Ride..... Somewhere?

The Follow Steve Ride..... Somewhere?

Ok, we're doing this ride a little different. I'm not telling anyone where we're going. All I'll tell you is that it's 390 km total distance. We'll travel on roads we've never travelled upon before, and we'll enjoy some wonderful scenery and riding on some of Ontario's highly recommended two-wheeler roads.

The start is at Tim Horton's at 3140 Dufferin Street (west side, north of Lawrence) at 8:00 am sharp!!! You MUST HAVE A FULL TANK at the start.

This is NOT a 50cc friendly ride and 400 Series Highways will be used for some of the route.
90 km 400 series to start us off.
16 km 400 series mid-day.
18 km 400 series end of day

Oh, and did I mention lunch. A nice little Cafe with great home-made food.
Got a sweet tooth? Right next door to the Cafe is a wonderful bakery. One of the few scratch-bakeries left. Scones, Chelsea Buns, Cinnamon Buns, Buttertarts, Pies and Cookies and more. Mmmmmmm.......

So... who's up for an adventure into the unknown? :o))

Now for that legal stuff we require......

Where did we go... well up Hwy 400 to just north of Barrie, then great backroads up to lunch at Bala on Lake Muskoka. Then an amazing piece of road called Southwood Road. The sign says.... Caution... Twisties for the next 33 KM!!!!!

Great to see those hardy souls who showed up today. Was a little bit cool this morning, but warmed up to comfortable for the afternoon. Good Food at Annie's in Bala and of course.... more buttertarts!!!!

    Thanks for coming out folks.

As to weather. It's actually looking quite good. Both Environment Canada and The Weather Network are showing only 30% chance and no measureable precipitation even if it does sprinkle. I'll have my rain suit under my seat (to scare it away) but will check again tomorrow evening for the latest forecast I can get. Unfortunately, Sunday is a wash-out for me (bad pun, I know) so it's Saturday or a postponement.

Steve, I have a GZ250. I've been on DVP before but am just not sure about this bike on 400 series highways. Wondering if there is any other 250 riders in the group joining the ride for tomorrow. Let me know.
    Thanks

    June 6, 2013

  • Steve_YYZ

Yes Damon, I'd be very surprised if we weren't home by then.

    June 3, 2013

  • Damon

Hey Steve, Will we be able to return to the city by 7:00pm? I've got a big date (with my wife).

    June 3, 2013

  • Steve_YYZ

    REMINDER to everybody....
Please check your tire pressures and oil levels before this ride.

    June 3, 2013

  • Steve_YYZ

Ok folks.... I've got the gas, lunch and coffee stop distances all worked out. Here they are.....

    133 km to 1st gas + Coffee
75 to second gas + Lunch
50 km to coffee stop (no gas)
    73 to gas/coffee (total gas distance 50 + 73 = 123 km)
    70 km to ride end

So everybody... please arrive at the start with a full bladder and an empty gas tank.
    Oooops, reverse that! :o))

    June 3, 2013

  • Patti

I'd love to join this ride!

Could you possibly tell us if you are going north east or west as me personally have no problem with the 401 or 400 but I hate the 401 in the city. I would like to make a Suggestion that you have your main meeting location as you made it but if you are going out of the city have a second spot just outside of the city. Why come from a direction just to go back to where you came from. For example if your ride is going north, why have people from the north ride south just to go back north. The same idea would be if you are going east or west. I have ridden over 300,000km in my time but I hate backtracking when it is not needed.

  • Steve_YYZ

Hi Margaret. While I really hate to disappoint fellow riders, this ride would be too ambitious for a 125cc scooter. While the mid-portions of the ride would be fine for you, the first 90 km transit to get there would over-tax your scooter and on 400 series highways, you are actually in more danger if you can't keep up with the flow of traffic. So we'll likely be running up to say 110 kph, and that's true GPS speed, not the optimistic value most scooter speedometers show. Add some hills and your 125 cc simply doesn't have the oooomph to be comfortable.

    March 26, 2013

  • Margaret

I have a 125cc. I have been on 400-series but not extensively. Also, will we be going above 100km/h?

    March 26, 2013

  • Steve_YYZ

LOL.... no fishing for clues Janice!!! :o))

Harry... gravel is just cement that hasn't been glued together yet.

Any chance you will be passing near Oshawa at the start? Loved to join you but can't commit until late May. I am off on a cruise across the Atlantic and a stay on Spain. Hope there will still be openings by then.
