Let's meet to talk about the parking bylaw

Hi everyone, I'd like to get a group of riders together to talk about how we can advocate to reverse or modify the scooter parking bylaw. In conversations with my city councilor he let me know that the best way to do this is in a group much like the cyclist coalition. Who's in?

Hi everyone, sorry for the change to Tuesday night, but I got called in to work for Monday. I also think it is a good idea that we combine the parking discussion with the regular Tuesday night meetup at DQ, this way we can get more people into the conversation. FYI, the arm responsible for the parking bylaw just yesterday refused to hear a motion by Counc. Matlow to re-open the issue. Now it will be delayed until September. It might be a good time for action. Hope you can still make it for Tuesday.

I new to owning a scooter and these by-laws. Does this problem not stem from the fact that 1) bicycles can park where ever they seem to want to. 2) Electric bicycles that are essentially scooters that run on batteries are considered bicycles. 3) The popularity of these electric bicycles is exploding and they`re needs to be parking restrictions in place for them. To me, this is what needs to be controlled. I own an MP3 250 I park it on the road and in front of a local business on their terrace over and beyond the sidewalk. Gas powered scooters were never supposed to park on sidewalks. For that matter all powered vehicles that fall under a traffic act should not park on city owned sidewalks.

Hi Gordon, you make some excellent points. I think the proliferation of all kinds of two-wheeled vehicles (battery or gas powered) has made this discussion even more interesting and necessary. As someone who has parked on city sidewalks and boulevards with my Vino (125 cc) for the past 4 years, I have taken extra care to exist harmoniously alongside bicycles and cars. I know there are some grey areas to this, i.e., size of bike, power source, where it can be safely stored or parked, but I know we can find some middle ground with this bylaw. It simply doesn't make sense and as my councilor concurred, it is nothing short of a cash grab. Recall that when the bylaw suddenly came into force. It was immediately after the downtown casino was nixed. I don't know if there was a connection but it does cause one to wonder if the city isn't looking for revenue streams....something to discuss next Monday. Hope you can make it.

Hi Carrie, I agree there needs to be some change and clarification made on these by-laws. Personally, I have no issue with small scooters parking the same as bicycles. This is really the only space available. I was drawing attention to what I see is a big part of the issue, as well as my understanding of the laws in there current form. In my travels to other cities I see special parking spaces made for "road worthy" cycles, motor bikes scooters and others. Often a car parking space is assigned and divided into 5-8 bike spaces. You see them in every grouping of curbside parking. Cars are not allowed to use them. This could be adapted to a seasonal practice in Toronto for 8 months of the year. It's all about getting along together.

    Hi Carrie ;-)
I'd be interested in more info/involvement as well but can't make that Monday meeting. Please keep me in the loop re: future meetings/actions.
    Thanks for taking this on!

Not sure if I can make this date. Let me know what can be done to help. I may be able to work on getting a couple of councillors to support this. (Although I would be surprised if they are not already on side with Councillor Matlow.)

The Public Works and Infrastructure Committee meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 19th where Councillor Josh Matlow's letter requesting a way to accommodate scooters will be brought to the committee by Councillor Michelle Berardinetti. Depending on the results, a meeting might be necessary.

Hi Magiq, I am aware of the FB group. It's great. I'm not sure if they are doing any in-person actions though. The page owner told me to take the lead on organizing actions / activities to coincide with the FB page.
