Shake out the Cobwebs/Cheltenham Badlands Ride

Well, after a long cold winter, we all need a tune-up ride and I'm in need of some country baking!!!! For those new riders in the club who might never have been out of the city, this is a great chance for a leisurely country jaunt.

So let's head up to the Cheltenham Badlands for some sightseeing, then lunch at Judy's in Erin followed by a quick stop at Holtom's Bakery for "supplies". Then it's out through the lovely Forks of the Credit and back down to the city.

No highway riding and speeds up to 80 kph (90 on your speedo).

144 km total distance with gas available at the lunch stop (72 km from start)

Here's the route (subject to tweaking)

http://goo.gl/maps/yEB4x

For those on their first outing with the club, and a reminder to the old hands, please arive at the start with a Full Gas Tank and an Empty Bladder!!! If you're planning coffee and breakfast at the Timmies, please arrive early so you're ready to ride by 9 am.

Now for that legal stuff we require......

By RSVP'ing Yes to this ride you have acknowledged that you have read, understood and agreed with our Group Riding Guidelines. You will also be required to sign a Waiver prior to the ride.

It was wonderful that Brent came all the way from London just to meet up with us.
    We are being noticed!

I was enjoying the beautiful weather and looking forward to the ride when my rear tire blew on Wilson Avenue just West of Yonge about 8:15. I'm glad I followed the full tank/empty bladder rule or I would have been in an even bigger mess!

I called Steve YYZ to let him know I would be AWOL, but his voice mail said he was out scouting for gravel roads.

A very friendly and efficient CAA driver rescued me about an hour later and took me to Studio Cycle, where despite their busy Spring workload, the guys fixed the problem ( a faulty valve actually popped off )right away. That's what I call great service!

Had I been smart enough to take a print-out of the trip details with me I could have caught up with the group. I won't make that mistake again.

If I have any problems with the St. Jacob's ride next Saturday there will be an ad in Kijiji for a Sym RV250 on Sunday!

I am glad that everyone had a great time yesterday and look forward to next weekend.

What a great ride, wonderful friends and weather that turned out to be just a lovely day. It's a shame though that only 10 riders turned out to participate in the ride. None the less, we all had a fun day and once again... MANY THANKS to our new member (1st time rider Bill) for such a thoughtful surprise.

Ahhhhh good morning everybody. The SUN is rising and it looks to be a wonderful day for a ride. Up until 9 am, it's never too late to come and join us!

By the way..... I've been told, instructed, warned.... that if we come back to Toronto without some delectible sweets and treats, that my further existence on this planet is somewhat in jeopardy!!! In light of this, we'll be making an unscheduled stop at Holtom's Bakery and the nearby Debora's Chocolate Shop after lunch. :o))

Oh, and this warning comes by way of one of our rider's spouses waiting at home!!! LOL!!!

I may finally be able to meet you guys...I have been a member since 2009 and never had the chance to get together. This weekend my other half is away at a conference in L.A. so it allows me a chance to ride to a place you guys will be at. Sorry never been a big group rider...love to explore the side roads too much but I may follow a distance behind you guys or meet you at your destinations or both. Brent... Majesty 400 London Ont.

Looks like I have a schedule conflict. But I might be able to catch up with you guys later ... where will you be around 13:00 Saturday ? THX JC

    May 9

    • Steve_YYZ

At 13:00 Saturday we will be at Point "C" on the map. That's Judy's Restaurant right behind the Petro Canada on the northeast corner of Trafalgar Rd and Hwy 124. Lunch is booked for 12:30 so by 1 pm I'll be about 1/2 way thru a great burger and fries! :o))

On my laptop, the Weather Network shows a P.O.P of 30% on Saturday.

On my tablet, the same network shows no possibility of precipitation on Saturday.

So I am going to bring my tablet on the ride to make sure we are OK!

    WEATHER UPDATE>>>>>>>
The weather Saturday is looking much better with overnight rain ending around 4 am and sunshine by 7 am with a lovely day after that. So the ride is a GO for Saturday. Try not to panic if it's raining when you go to be Friday night..... it will get better.
Here's the hour-by-hour from the Weather Network.

    See you all Saturday.

Well folks, It looks like rain on Saturday. If that's the case I'm out of the Badlands ride. I'll check the forcast again on Friday. JC

Me too - if it rains, I'm out. I'll wait for a nicer day to go for my first group ride.

I can live with "glub blub bubble glurp" as long as it's not "bubble, blubble toil and trouble". :o)

  • HARRY J. R.

I'm with James on not riding in the rain. If I'm looking for wet recreation I go snorkeling!
Sunday looks good. Can we keep our options open?

    May 7

    • Steve_YYZ

Don't worry Harry....options are open. I'll look at the hour-by-hour forecase tomorrow (Thursday) and see where we stand. My issue is that at present I've got a prior committment on Sunday that I'm still not sure I can change. Looking at that option as well. Oh and Harry.... thought you liked following me in my "Green Monster" rainsuit! :o))

Thanks for the update on road conditions Steve, but I need a report on how your GPS ( Gravel Position System) is working!

    May 5

    • Steve_YYZ

Harry... Harry... Harry.... there's LOTS of gravel up there.... in the ditches. You do know how to ride and stay on the road, don't you? LOL!!!

      May 5

  • Steve_YYZ

I've just uploaded the Garmin GPX file for this ride in the Files section of the site. If you've got a GPS that you want to try out, upload this file into your GPS, set your GPS for "Shortest Distance" to calculate the route and away you go.

Went out and pre-rode the route this morning. Roads are far better than I had feared. Heck, they've even got the speedbumps taken out of the Forks. Guess they took them out for winter plowing and haven't put them back in yet. But whoa!!!!! some of those wind gusts today were heavy-duty stuff.

Vurt da Furk....time to suss out all these people and get them all to JOIN our happy little bunch of miscreants. I'm up for tailgunning a group ( yes John, I know that it is more difficult to 'gun, but it would also be a pain for me to lead a bunch to Saskatchewan when I get profoundly lost. ) Let me know.

Harry Darling, I don't think you need a "grope" to warm you up.....but if that is what is called for......!

As I said before, the thought of Spring is warming me up, but a grope would do it faster!
