"IMPROV your Anxiety Workshop" - a workshop for the Shy & Socially Anxious

Workshop Title:  IMPROV your Anxiety

Start Date: Sunday, January 19th (must attend a pre-workshop orientation prior to this date on a mutually arranged date, with the workshop organizer, in order to be able to participate in the workshop)

Duration:  8 weeks, every Sunday from 11 am - 2 pm

Cost:  Cost is set to be accessible.  Once you email me with your interest in joining I will email you the cost individually.

Instructor:  An experienced Improv instructor & performer with personal experience with Social Anxiety.  The instructor used Improv to help overcome his severe Social Anxiety.

Who should join this workshop:  Anyone who feels that anxiety, social anxiety, shyness interferes with their ability to function well in daily life, in social situations, and generally impacts their overall wellbeing and is looking for ways to overcome anxiety and be more confident.

About the Workshop: The instructor will lead the class of about 15 people in group games that come from Improv theatre.  This workshop will have a non-performance focus, meaning that the emphasis in the workshop will be on using the games to help with social anxiety, rather than to try and create great future theatre performers.  Most of the games will not be performance based games but games that will allow you to interact with other participants in the workshop in a FUN & Supportive environment.

Some potential Benefits of Improv:

Greater spontaneity, ability to think on your feet, rather than pre-plan what you have to say.

Greater focus as you learn to be more in the moment and not get distracted by worrying about the future.

Greater flexibility and adaptability in social situations.

Learning to celebrate mistakes so that you experience less self-judgement.

Learning to trust your own instincts/reactions so that you have greater confidence in your decisions, greater confidence overall.

Learning to embrace weakness & vulnerability leading to reduced performance anxiety in a variety of situations (i.e. social, work, school situations)

Greater assertivenessGreater ease in initiating and starting conversations

Greater comfort in group situations

Greater comfort in making eye contact

Re-igniting or enhancing a sense of "play" and creativity.

By learning to be more in the moment and interacting through games, feeling a greater sense of connectness to others which you can carry into your life.

Playing these games can be energizing, increasing your sense of vitality and wellbeing in your life.

Instructions if you would like to participate:

1) Email me stating why you would like to participate in this workshop AND write a brief paragraph that doesn't have to be really personal, but that tells me the following:  Why you want to participate in this workshop, how you feel anxiety or shyness negatively effects your life, and why you think you could benefit from this workshop.

Note:  Those who have not previously participated in an Improv workshop may be given priority in terms of filling spots in this workshop.

Important Note: As a participant in this workshop you will also have to agree to participating in a research study.  This study is run by myself (rphinn) and is not affiliated with any hospital or organization but the organizer has future plans of doing further research in this area with a sponsor organization in the future.  Therefore, prior to the workshop start date, during the workshop from time to time, and at the end of the workshop you will be required to complete some questionnaires.  All of the information you provide in the questionnaires will be 100% confidential.  More information about this research will be provided to you before you start the workshop.
