Dress Rehearsal, Act I of Ballet Jörgen "Romeo & Juliet" | Feb 27th | 6:45 p.m.

  • February 27 · 6:45 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Once again this year, Toronto Photographic has been invited to attend and photograph a dress rehearsal for Canada's Ballet Jörgen (CBJ).

This year's performance is for Act I of Romeo & Juliet, and it will take place in Toronto, at the Betty Oliphant Theatre, located at 404 Jarvis Street.

This is an incredibly amazing opportunity for photographers who would like to capture exquisite images of ballet dancers performing in a dress rehearsal. The photographs you capture will be both memorable as well as being a wonderful addition to your portfolio. You will also have a chance to submit photos to Ballet Jörgen for use in their promotional material. This kind of event doesn't happen everyday and we are extremely pleased once again to be able to offer it to our members this year.

The dress rehearsal will start at approximately 7:30 p.m. but we will be allowed entrance to the theatre at 7:00 so if you're attending, please plan to show up by 6:45 p.m. so that we may have time to set up in the theatre before the performance begins.

Camera Gear & Equipment to Bring

Since the lighting conditions of the theatre most likely will be changing between light and dark, it is recommended to bring your fastest lenses (f/1.4, f/1.8, f/2.0, f/2.8). As well, in order to make sure that you're able to get close up shots, it's also highly recommended to bring any zoom lenses you might have. Be aware that even if you don't have them, you can rent longer (and faster - f/2.8) zoom lenses from Henry's or Vistek.

Organizers Available for Help & Instruction

I will be attending this event and will be available to anyone with questions. Ballet Jörgen will also possibly be providing a short instructional on how to photograph the dance prior to the performance. We're still working this out at this point in time.

Submission of Images to Ballet Jörgen for Review

After the performance, Ballet Jörgen are extremely interested in obtaining copies of your photographs, which they plan to use for advertising,  website, and press releases. This is not a requirement, but if you're interested in having your images submitted for use, please be prepared to send pictures for review to Johnny Vong, Digital Producer. He can be contacted here: [masked].

Conditions of Photographing the Dress Rehearsal & Use of Photographs

- CBJ must be credited in photographs that enter the public domain, such as individual web sites.

- CBJ will be delighted to review any portfolios that come out of the shoot for their own use and will credit accordingly.

Rules & Guidelines for Photographing in the Theatre

The following are guidelines from Canada’s Ballet Jörgen (CBJ) regarding the rehearsal photography session. These rules and guidelines must be followed without exception as a matter of courtesy to the performers and crew. Anyone not following these may be asked by CBJ to leave the theatre, so please bear this in mind.

• No flash is to be used; the photographers need to work with the stage lights and some sections of the ballet will be dark and some more bright.

• Tripods & monopods are okay to use, but cannot be used in the stairs. Please be considerate where noise is concerned, as they can sometimes rattle. As well, please make sure that other people will not trip over your equipment.

• Photographers must be quiet; the artistic director and lighting designer will be seated in the audience and will need to communicate with the dancers and crew.

• Photographers can shoot from anywhere in the theatre, but not from the stage. As well, we advise that the photographers do not get in front of the stage as a courtesy to the other photographers and please do not block the crew’s view.

Image Copyright Information & Submission Information

Photographers are the owners of first copyright on all photographs taken at the photo shoot (the Photographs); however, in order to protect our dancers and as a condition of participation in the photo shoot, photographers may not reproduce, publish, sell or enter into the public domain (collectively, publicize) the photographs unless they are approved by CBJ. The photographer may obtain approval to publicize the photographs from CBJ as follows:

• Contact CBJ [masked] requesting an invitation to submit his or her photos.

• CBJ will send an invitation to Dropbox. This is the only method of photo submission accepted.

• Each photographer can submit up to 20 photos.

• CBJ will notify the Photographer which of the Photographs he or she may publicize.

• Response time will depend on the number of photographer submissions received, please allow a minimum of 2-4 weeks for a response.

• Finally, if CBJ wishes to use any of your photos in our promotional materials, you will be contacted for your permission and to provide you with the appropriate credit.

Additional Important Information About Image Submissions

Ballet Jörgen has an excellent reputation to maintain. This is why the ballet company must review your photographs, which is standard for the industry. Upon review, Ballet Jörgen has the right to either grant or deny permission for your use, as the photographs represent Ballet Jörgen .

For example, if they see a ballet dancer's toe misaligned, they will reject your picture even though you may think it is the best picture you have ever taken. If you are not interested in complying with these conditions, it is probably best that you don't attend as a photographer, as you will be frustrated. It is a privilege to be invited to attend this dress rehearsal, so these conditions are being shared with you in advance.

I have made several attempts to contact [masked] to get the links to have my shots reviewed and be given permission to use the the shots in a exhibit. I never received any answer.
I drove from Rochester NY just to shoot the rehearsal so I am upset with the ballet troupe for not co-operating.

I'm sorry to hear that you haven't heard back yet from Johnny. From what I understand several people have heard back so far and it may just be that Johnny hasn't gotten to your submitted photos yet due to the sheer volume. I imagine It takes time to go through so many photos but I can understand how frustrating it must be to wait.

      May 8

    • Edwin L.

There are 12 folders in the dropbox account. One for each photographer - as far as I know - Johnny has made his choice for all 12 photographers.

  • Svetlana

Hi there, I'm wondering if somebody received any feedback or confirmation from the organizer that we have rights to public pictures? Thank you!

    May 8

    • Edwin L.

The link was dropbox.com - access is granted by Johnny to your account - my email address was my userid. I just looked - he created a new folder called JV Approved inside your folder and put whatever image they approved it in. Svetlana: You have such a folder under your name.

What an amazing experience! Thank you, Stephen, for a wonderful opportunity and all of the hard work it must've taken you to put this together. I met a lot of patient and helpful people, learned a great deal about lowlight action photography and captured a few decent images as a result. I'm looking forward to more outings with this group in the coming months.

Kam, I tried to ensure everyone got one. Tickets were handed out at the beginning of the event when I called everyone down from their seats and Natalie was kind enough to tear the tickets and hand them out while I checked off people's names on my list to make sure that people got them. If you arrived later, as a few people did, that would explain why you might not have received a ticket. A few of those people who were late approached me for a ticket and were given one. The good news is that because I had my list of people I'd checked off, there were only a few people that didn't get tickets so I manually placed tickets for each of you in the draw so you would be included. Your ticket number was[masked] and unfortunately didn't win. I hope that clears up any confusion.

Thanks Stephen of your thoughtfulness. I actually arrived before 6:45 pm and we met at the stage door. I really appreciated you organized such a good event.

Agree 100%. Stephen needs to really be appreciated for his hard work on our behalf, especially doing it while sick. Thanks Steve.

I would like to thank Stephen James for arranging and hosting this event. It is a lot of hard work, with all the preparation necessary and making sure everyone is accommodated. There are very few opportunities for such a large group of photographers to shoot a professional ballet company in rehearsal. We are very fortunate, indeed, that Ballet Jorgen has opened their doors to Toronto Photographic. I'm looking forward to more great events.

    Cheers,

The same ballet (not just act I) is on today at noon at the four seasons centre and it's free. Makes it hard to understand the $20 admission here

Lisa, it was a great event for many of us...for providing this opportunity, whoever is getting the money, they deserve it...you should see how much other photography groups charge for their events and reconsider the concept of "steep"...Just my thoughts!

      February 28

    • Lawrence H.

I can't speak for "many of us". To me, it was an ok event, not a great one.

I would say that I could come 2 hours late and most likely it will be the same resulte... Well, it was OK but a woman who was stucked in front of the stage was too much...

It was kind of false advertising - that was not a dress rehearsal - it was a tech rehearsal that we were shooting.

As compared with the Swan Lake event last year, last night was kind of disappointment to me. The Swan Lake was running from beginning to the end without interruption so we can photo the actual performance.Last night they spent lots of time on lighting and positioning. And some performers did not even take of their track pants. Look awful. Also the dance was not up to the performance standard. Kind of disappointed.

Thanks for the opportunity to shoot last night, Stephen. It was fantastic (albeit challenging!)

    February 28

    • Stephen J.

You're very welcome Renata. I'm glad you could make it. Did you get some good shots? I was mostly filming and have a lot of footage to edit now...

      February 28

  • Mike G.

Great experience. Thanks for the opportunity. Question about uploading photos here. Do the photos need to be approved by the ballet before they can be uploaded here?

    February 27

    • Stephen J.

Hey Mike. All photos must be approved by Ballet Jorgen before entering the public domain. I'm about to send out an email outlining how you can submit your photos to Johnny Vong at CBJ.

      February 28

    • Stephen J.

    February 21

    • Stephen J.

Hey Linda, I've sent you two emails (the first one of which bounced back for some reason so I'll copy/paste here): I'm sorry but I'm not sure where you're seeing that your name has been added to the list of those attending. It's still on the list of people who want a spot. There is no waiting list for this event as it sold out the first day. Meetup creates a list of people who want a spot (I'm not sure why they do this) but unfortunately unless someone says they're not going and changes their RSVP, all the spots are accounted for.

      February 21

    • Linda S

Ok. Thank you Stephen. I would be happy to come on a day's notice if there is a cancellation. I did shoot both Acts I and II of this ballet by special request last Fall but always welcome an opportunity to do it again.

As you may know from my bio, I use a wheelchair. Also, my camera attaches to my chair with a tripod-like device which limits the height to about 4'. Do you think there will be any vantage points that will allow me to get clear shots? I can bring a long lens.

    February 18

    • Stephen J.

Thanks Jeff for your assessment. I've yet to visit the place too, and I've just called to see if the Oliphant Theatre is indeed wheelchair accessible. The kind lady on the phone said she'd call me back momentarily so I am awaiting her reply. Apart from that, looking at the seating from the link above, I am absolutely certain that you would be able to get some good clear shots.

      February 18

    • Stephen J.

Wow.. fast... Gail called me back and let me know that indeed, the theatre IS wheelchair accessable which is wonderful. We will make arrangements with security to get anyone who needs access in the front door rather than the stage door.
