Dance & Photography
Today we will take a closer look at a few tips that will make your life easier when it comes down to shooting moving subjects. In order to do so I have invited two belly dancers to join us with their full gear, including swords, wings, various colour costumes, etc.
We will kill two birds with this shoot, the first is study of movement and second is shooting two dancers as they perform a few amazing belly dance pieces that contain many posed moments for us to shoot.
- You will learn more about lighting and setup for a studio shoot
- Directing your subject and subject study
- understanding which angles work and which do not
- Introducing mood with lighting
Our models also informed me that they do have a surprise for us at the end of the workshop, I look forward to finding out :)
Our Dancers for the day are:
Naima: Is an accomplished Belly dancer and instructor
(courtesy of CBC documentary Photographer)
Anna: Belly dance, Samba and theatrical production Performer
(Our apology for lack of better images, Anna is on tour
and was unable to provide us with better shots, we grabbed these from FB)
Who is it for?
Whether you're a seasoned photographer looking to freshen up your portfolio, just starting out your career in photography, a hobbyist who wants to learn some new skills, this shoot is for you. Of course an interest in shooting this kind of commercial minded style is a HUGE plus.
What you will learn in this session?
• Directing the model
• Lighting in studio for a fashion shoot
• Communicating ideas with the stylist
• Communicating ideas with your Makeup artist
• Using reflectors, strobes and other lighting modifiers
Model Release Forms
A release for non-commercial purposes, signed by the model and designer, will be provided to each photographer. All photographs from the photo shoot can be used for personal promotional purposes in your portfolio, on the web, in print media such as personal advertising post cards.
Please note that in order to attend and use the off camera strobes, your DSLR camera must have a flash hot-shoe for the wireless transmitter. Please consult your manual to see if your camera qualifies before signing up. The studio uses an Elinchrome EL-Skyport wireless trigger system.
DSLR Sony Owners: please be advised if you shoot with a Sony DSLR. Sony uses a proprietary hot-shoe for the trigger system, which the studio does not have in stock. If you plan to use your Sony DSLR, please bring your hot-shoe adapter.
What to bring with you
• DSLR Camera
• Fully charged batteries
• Freshly formatted memory cards
• Your favorite lenses 50mm, 24-70 or[masked] would work well
*** Please make sure to wear comfortable shoes. ***
*** You may require to use a step ladder during the setup. ***
Why choose our workshops,
they are more expensive than other groups.
I have been teaching photography to adults for a few years now and in my experience both as a teacher and a business person I understand the difference quality makes. As I am sure you all do.
Some groups offer the "I setup, you shoot" method at lower cost to you. The downside is, you get the potato but not the meat. Recreating those images is hard when you have no directions and guide lines. Years ago I took images of the sets and thought to myself, OK I got it ... but that was just not the case. There are many variables that have to be accounted for, and that only comes with time, practice and more hands-on education.
Our superior method is, "I explain, you setup, you shoot", this always offers a more realistic photography experience. Keeping the groups small also means you get to do more and can ask questions. For the money you are paying, no matter the price, you should be able to get clear answers about your workshop related questions.
To sum up, we offer a Ferrari at BMW price instead of a Chevette at Hyundai price.
I should mention to reduce our carbon footprint, we went green and use autoshare
so I'm not up to date on car prices. But I'm sure you get the point ;)
NOTE: Snacks and Refreshments will be served.
