Toronto Poetry Club Meeting - August 28th

Poetry Circle Meetup - Bring 1 or 2 pieces of your personal poetry with you to share. If you don't want to read aloud someone else can read for you.

Poetry Circle Meetups are basically just that, we sit in a circle of chairs and each person gets a turn reading their poetry and then we discuss your poetry and provide feedback.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own poetry for reading, to present it in whatever fashion you desire, and if you feel uncomfortable reading aloud then someone else can read your poetry for you.

So bring your poetry. Feel free to bring extra copies that can be passed around.

Invite your poetry writing friends.

Expect to be entertained by the wide breadth of poets we have in Toronto.

Meetings last typically 90 minutes or more, depending on how many people come to the meetup. So if you show up 30 minutes late you can still present your poetry to the group for commentary.

Please be on time for the poetry meeting if you can. If you know you will be late on Thursday please post "ETA 7 PM" or something similar. If you are lost / cannot find the Hart House building stop and ask an U of T student for directions. Your navigation or Google Map app on your smart phone can also be used to find Hart House if you are lost.

I have been deliberating about the poem about Nelson Mandela by Sheldon and was wondering how Madiba would react to it, the one who was a paragon of forgiveness, a principle higher than justice, something truly hard for someone trained in law, but who had the courage and vision to see that the greater good is sometimes served by looking outside the 'ways of the box.'

Before I joined Toronto poetry club - group of poets I anticipated that at last there is a place where our work will be appreciated, we will be treated warmly and most important of all there will be encouragement for amateurs. Let's make this a place of true learning, and contribution. Let's grow together where we can be proud of us collectively. Arif you have wisdom, and the spirit of a true poet. Teach us something valuable, and you will be admired beyond your wildest imagination. You know what I am saying here!

I would like to thank Charles and Miranda for organizing the meetup. It was a pleasure to hear from veteran as well as amateur poets and share our creativity.
I have a few suggestions to enhance our meetup experience for future.
    1) I would really like that everyone in the audience has a copy of the poem which is being read. For some of us it is difficult to operate from short term memory alone.
    2) I didn't know who the wonderful people were who came and participated, other than their names. I would really like everyone to share a brief bio about them before we begin.
    3) I would really like if we can have a 15 - 20 min discussion on a topic related to poetry writing. eg metrics, styles, types of poems.
    4) The feedback must have a structure. There should be 3 official feedback by rotation on every poem read. It should include what was good and what is to improve, and what the listener got out of it.
Maybe I can talk about how to analyze a poem in 5 minutes or less in our next meeting.
