Discourse (Ruby + EmberJS) Hack Night

  • Jul 22, 2014 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

July brings us an awesome hack night! We're pairing up with the open-source project Discourse to work on their bugs! We're going to have Robin Ward (@eviltrout) and Neil Lalonde (@neill) from the Discourse crew here in person!

The theme of the night will be to work on their tickets (they are a Ruby on Rails and EmberJS based project). Here is a preview of the issues you'll be tackling.

This is not a general hack night. If you RSVP, please be prepared to work on something related to Discourse. Newbies are still welcome to come, of course!

Before you arrive: please have vagrant installed from here: http://www.vagrantup.com/ (we will provide an image for you to develop off)

Here's the schedule:

• Arrive at theScore at 6PM

• Introductions at 6:15PM

• Hack and stuff at 6:30PM

• Doors close at 9:00PM (or do they?)

Hope to see you there!

Note: Please do not RSVP if your intent is recruiting developers.

It was great to get an overview of a major rails/ember application, and how it is architected, developed, and deployed. Awesome meetup!

Fun night indeed: got more insight into Discourse's internals, just enough to whet an appetite. Hope there will be more Hack Nights similar to tonight's. If I could make just one suggestion, maybe we can come up with a system to share the issues/bugs to be worked on that allows us to know which people are working on the same items, so we can (maybe) collaborate...

Yeah that's an excellent idea. People started using the forum to collaborate but maybe we should whiteboard which group is working on what next time.

I've created a bunch of topics on Discourse under the "hack-night" category with ideas for things to work on:

    https://meta.discourse.org/category/dev/hack-night

Of course Neil and I will be around for more ideas, help and suggestions. If there's interest I could even do a tour of the code base.

    Tomorrow is the big day!

Before you show up, I *strongly* recommend following these instructions to get the VM set up: http://blog.discourse.org/2013/04/discourse-as-your-first-rails-app/

Hey everyone, just a reminder that this is a project-focused hack night. Since we'll be working as Discourse the easiest way to get hacking on it is through a virtual machine. Please have Vagrant installed and ready to run a VM!
