Java Beach Cafe and San Francisco Zoo

Meet me at Java Beach Cafe about 3 blocks from the zoo.  We'll either eat lunch here or in the zoo and can come back to the Cafe afterwards to hang out, optional.

I haven't been to this zoo in years, supposedly it's larger than Oakland's zoo. My grandchildren go there all the time as it's free for under 3 years old.

From the web site, www.sfzoo.org, the zoo looks fairly large but looks walkable in a few hours. I walked the British Museum in Victoria on a free day with 600 children on site.

Admission is $15, might be a charge for parking unless it can be found on the street.

If anyone wants a ride from the east bay, just tell me if you're within my area or just leave me an email message.

Directions to the zoo are detailed so you'd have to go to www.googlemaps.com, 1 Zoo Road, San Francisco.

I've now got the pics (with a few more) and links to two youtube videos of SF zoo day, for those interested in the zoo, starting at http://www.pbase.com/andrys/image/149257247/original
Linda, I probably posted too many SF zoo pics for meetup.com, so keep what you think is ok and feel free to delete the rest. Thanks.

Spectaular day, zoo was more than expected, lots of animals spread out areas for them to roam, unlike Oakland zoo.

Thanks for putting that together, Linda. I had a really fun time with the group. Interesting difference in reactions, as I found the tigers at Oakland Zoo much easier to see and enjoy - they had a meadow-like area to roam in and we watched from above but with good clear views of them, and SF Zoos has to have high barriers that make it hard to see them except for the diamond-shaped openings in those fences at the edges.
The Lions House, a guard said, is closed because of the new tiger cub and they don't know when they'll let us see it. In the meantime, the lions are seeable outside, somewhere. But I love having access to all those animals at the SF Zoo, which seems to have more than the Oakland one, although Oakland zoo has larger free-areas for them predatory ones...

I wish I had double checked this event. I had it marked for Sunday. :(

Hi. I have recently moved to Antioch, and I am looking for new friends in the area, especially with travel interest. I have been to the San Francisco zoo many times and never tire of it. I am presently in New York but will return on Wednesday March 13th, so I will see how I'm feeling once I return (jet lag and all) and then will RSVP before Friday to this event. Looking forward to future events with this group.

Andrys, I'm a senior but not 65 yet. I'll have to drive as it's too far to come from the delta with BART and Muni. I'll just arrive there early.

Penn, thanks for the reminder. On weekends, parking in the lot is $10, but at: http://www.sfzoo.org/plan-directions -- it says "Free street parking is available along Sloat Boulevard." If you take Muni you get $1 off admission, and Senior + SF resident admission prices are lower. As a member now of Oakland zoo, I get 50% off.

    FYI: Parking is $8.00.

I'm good at either hour (as long as we have time to shoot some photos of the animals -- have never felt rushed there when going before so it should be okay). Also, I can also go earlier if I want and meet you folks at your meeting time (not that I am ordinarily an early morning person!) So, anything goes here, re time.

It's a Saturday so commute's not as bad as a weekday. I come from Oakley! Someone wanted to go early, others at noon. Any more opinion as to preferred time?

I liked the previous scheduled time of noon. 10am will be difficult for me to make since it's a long commute. Being somewhat crowded in the afternoon is not a big deal for me. We'll be staying there in the afternoon, when it's crowded, even if we arrive early at 10am. So why not meet at noon?

One thing, on a Saturday afternoon it'll be very crowded. Maybe earlier? It's been a long time since I went there and I'm looking forward to it. Are you planning enough time for people to take photos?
